We woke up in the fog in Passau. Actually, in more ways than one as we had to use the alarm to get us up at 7 am. At 8:30 we took a walking tour of the city. We started in the fog but it gradually burned off and it turned into beautiful sunny day. We attribute this to bringing our heavy raincoats and deciding not to bring sunscreen. Passau was governed by prince-bishops until 1806, so we saw the bishop's ...

Today we woke up in Passau - this is a small town at the confluence of 3 rivers - the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz and is very picturesque. The old city was destroyed by fires in the 16th and 17th centuries and rebuilt in the architecture craze at the time -Italian Baroque. Quite a few on the boat elected to join one of the optional extra tours which lasted all day, but we decided to stick with the included walking tour of Passau in the morning and the stay ...

It was very fun arriving in Passau by bicycle last night, and riding into the city gave us a better appreciation for its position as a city built at the confluence of three rivers -- the Ilz (runs from Switzerland and is known as the black river), the Inn (the strongest current and known as the green river, also key source of prior salt trade and wealth for the city) and the "blue" Danube (our guide said she has lived here ...

... placed an Italian restaurant on our path. Realizing we didn't speak German, the waitress called on the owner, Luigi, who kindly explained to us the menu in Italian. Feigning to understand his words with some "Si, si", we ordered a caprese salad, pizza and pasta, all the carbs necessary to cover the 56km remaining to our goal. We then followed the Inn cycle path for about 30km ...

... close as we could to Passau, until we decided to swim in a local lake, which is always the best sensation in the world after 2 days of riding with no shower. Feeling clean again, we rode to the next campsite 10km ahead, where we found out that the town, Marktl, was ex pope Benedict's birth place. After a dinner composed of Cordon Bleu mit Pommes, we headed back to the campsite to have cows and sheep from the farm rock us to a well deserved ...
