Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru avi_einat... visit a square which boasts a mirador of the El Misti mountain. However we never found it, as the road we were told to go down was a dead end and as the book does not helpfully give the name of the square or the church, so when we asked where it was we were directed back to Plaza de Armas!!! Walking around this neighborhood, all we could see what nice gated houses or streets with guards and barbed wired at the top. It struck us that maybe we should not hang around ...
Arequipa, Peru benyclaire... picture and imagine our heads on other peoples' bodies. There were some Asian tourists who screamed the entire time and insisted on speaking their own language though they understood Spanish, which was a little annoying for me and profoundly so for Mollie.

We decided to pass on scaling El Misti in order to save our money for horses or mules in the Sacred Valley. And as for Colca Canyon, well... Cabanaconde had more in store for us than we ever imagined.
Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru nathanialwest... as tradition decreed that the second daughter would automatically be sent into the church. The first daughter is married, the third daughter was required to look after the parents until they passed away. The poor sod who was sent to Peru was only allowed 25 prescribed items, they lived in private ‘cells’ leading isolated lives surrounded by high walls. The grounds are fantastic – 2 hectares, nearly 5 square miles totally enclosed. The convent has its own streets ...
Arequipa, Peru suenson_taylorsSorry for the delay in blogging. Last week was a bit hectic, getting ready for a presentation and helping some of the girls prepare to teach an English class. I also went on a trip with the Davidson students over the weekend. I will do my best to get those pics posted in the next couple of days.

Early in the week, we went and watched one of the students in the Salir Adelante program defend his thesis. Arequipa, Peru forbes.thompson... of you, you stop. Then as there is space in the first lane, you pull out, and wait until the next lane has an opening. Meanwhile, the cars that were moving perpendicularly to you in the first lane pull right up to your car and stop. Its sort of like a jig saw puzzle. It generally takes about 10 feet of space, for a car to make its move. Stop lights and signs are merely suggestions, so crossing the street is always risky, even at a ...

The next day though, I had some excellent menu del dia (a cheap multi-course meal) nearby. Served alongside a fantastic ceviche like salad was a pork chop with rice, and freshly made mango juice, all for under three dollars.
Next I head off toward Lake Titicaca, on the border of Peru and Bolivia.

Arequipa, Peru dlz... they could employ some local knowledge of a pitch that had a m*********** in at one point, an irrigation channel through one side of it, and a covering of mule droppings. Brilliant fun though!

Yesterday morning was another early start... 5 in the morning! From the base of the canyon we had to hike out, over a kilometre up. It was brutal! At times you had to avoid oncoming mules, and some points were extremely testing but we completed it in good time and the Oreos I enjoyed at ...
