HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I am very thankful that I will not be missing out on turkey dinner this year and that there are two large ex-pat turkey dinners happening, one today and one on Saturday. Tonight's dinner is rumored to have 40 people and 10 turkeys. I'm excited about the dinners but I do wish I were home in MA celebrating with friends and family! The last few weeks in Dar Es Salaam have been very random. This past weekend I went to a wedding on Saturday and was part of a bridal photo sh...
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania glynnjaWe knew we made a mistake when our flight stopped briefly on Zanzibar Island....and everyone got off! Everything had been perfect up to now and my heart sunk when I looked at Bruce with whom I am obviously now telepathic with after our years together! Oh, well. In for a penny! As soon as we landed in Dar es Salaam Bruce offered to take us back to Zanzibar..its is only a 20 min flight but I said no....we will stay the course...at least for one one night! How bad can it be? We are quite savy wi...

The walk from Horombo to Mandara should take three to four hours, and then from there the gate is just a couple hours further. Tonight there is time for a welcomed hot shower before dinner which will no doubt be followed by a few celebratory drinks with your fellow climbers!

... who had a reputation as magicians and if you said to someone that you would curse them they would wisper to someone to ask what tribe you were from to see if your threat had any weight to it. We got to our hostel a little late but the nice thing about traveling with someone is splitting a room. This was by far the biggest room I have stayed in so far and on top of it there was a bathroom in the room (bonus). We then went down to the bar to grab a bite to eat. At first I thought ...
Dar es Salaam/ Zanzibar, Tanzania mike_brightI chatted with Kaseem, who works in admin in the hospital, last week about high season in Stonetown, hotel bookings, rates and general touristy stuff. 'It's so busy, you simply have to book', he said. 'But I am a public figure on Zanzibar, and together we will find the best place for your sister and your husband'. Excellent, I thought, and arranged to meet him after work for a tour of the 'premier guesthouses' of ...
Dar Es Salaam, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, United Republic of eforan... s first camping experience went well. Next morning went on Masai warrior village tour around the mud huts - very traditional, dress & housing etc, apart from the latest cell phones connected to their spear belt. Liz's first chance to dance came with the Masai warriors sing & dance show. quite a sight! Next day woke up at 5am at new campsite ready to visit Ngorongoro crater and on to Serengeti National Park ...
Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania nixandliz... English with them which was good - they really are clever, they seem to understand everything! I played some games with class 6 and then we did some dancing practice which we all felt very confident about and were looking forward to Sunday. The girls and I then put together a programme for Sports Day, working out what we should include etc. 25/10 - Holly, Hayley and I went to Bongoyo Island where we saw loads of eels and jelly fish - they were massive ...

This is an African non sequitur. In the West, if a train is late, then there is invariably a reason: there was debris on the track that needed to be cleared, a passenger caused a disturbance in a preceding station, the conductor got out of bed late, etc. We look for these reasons and usually find them. In Africa, all of ...
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania jef_smi... some much needed sleep. The next morning, we drove to the US Embassy so Happy's niece Anna Gloria could get her US Visa. Anna goes to the International School in Eden Prairie, MN and is entering her junior year. The embassy is built like a fortress with cement walls and two sensitive metal detectors we had to clear. Plus all cameras and cell phone and anything else they wanted we had to leave at the entrance. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. Two and a half hours later ...
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania ldambrosio1... there are two people to a tent so this task is shared with one's tent mate, in my case Jace, a very nice Korean guy who is on a round the world trip, stopping along the way to do volunteer work every now and then.) Fortunately, we didn't have to prepare dinner ourselves as the rest of our crew had stayed behind to prepare a tasty beef stew with rice. By then it was too late to do anything but take a quick shower and dive into my sleeping bag exhausted.
