Kyle's 30th birthday turned out to be an incredible day. We started off with the hotel bringing him a cake and singing to him during breakfast. Then we decided to take an adventure to the island's most famous beach. We drove for an hour and a half south through the mountains, much of it on the edge of a huge gorge. The views were incredible and there were several quaint villages cascading down the slopes. We spotted several picturesque churches and an abundance of ...

After a while on the beach, we found a good waterfront restaurant and were shocked by how low the prices were ...

Moved a little further west – 60km- to Chania. Yet another Venetian port and another "old town". Once again a pretty old town with lots of narrow alleyways, cafes and tourist shops. But nice.

Went to visit the war museum one day but closed due to renovations. Then out to Souda Bay to have a look at the bay that General Freyberg thought he had to defend rather than the airport at Malame. And ...

... a coffee (the lady seems to have a rather miserable disposition) and started up the path. Four hours is a lot, but luckily it seemed less intense than Mt Zas (two hours up). After about an hour I came across a pretty girl sitting on a rock. She was on her way down, but not from the summit--from some stop prior. She said she didn't feel like going to the summit since it's a long, dangerous trek and her husband (dang!) is waiting in the Cave of ...
