Journey to Jodhpur

24/1/2008 The Little Golden City in Ajmer We left Umaid Bhawan around 9:00 am and headed on our way along the highway to Jodhpur, approx 340 kms away - via a couple of unplanned detours that we took. The first being a brief stop (at Sanjeev's insistent suggestion) at a most fascinating temple in Ajmer - the Soni Ki Nasiyan, or also known as 'Lal Mandir', which was built in 1865 in red stone, and displayed inside the nearby double story hall are exquisite golden plated wooden models of Jain li...

Jodhpur, a City of blue!

24/1/2008 - 25/1/2008 As the day fades into the night... Night time was approaching as we made our way through the outskirts of Jodhpur. Traffic was building up in the city and a few government buildings and the Sadar Market's clock tower were lit up in coloured lights, ready for India Independence Day celebrations on 26th January (same date as our Australia Day celebrations!). We continue driving through narrow streets to our home for the night - Krishna Prakash Heritage Haveli, built in the...

On the road from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur

28/1/2008 On the road again...to arrive at Jodhpur From Jaisalmer to Jodhpur is approx. 305 kms. The road is bitumen and 2 laned, and most of the time, not too busy. Everything that can travel will travel on these roads (and throughout India) from pedestrians, bicycles, carts, motor bikes, tuk-tuks, tractors, cars, trucks, and animals, so horns are often blaring for overtaking/passing. Sanjeev seemed to love his, beeping most of the time! There were a few moments where other drivers/riders wo...

India - It Seems to be Getting Better

The waiting area at Jodhpur train station is about the size of a hockey rink. Three quarters of it is filled with people covered in blankets, sleeping side-by-side, not an inch between them. The ramp leading to platform number two is far too steep and treacherous for cows to navigate, so we're alone with yet another mass of people. It's 5:45 am and the train to Jaisalmer is delayed two hours. Without a touch of bashfulness men walk up to us and simply stare. It isn't disconcerting, it's been ...

Jodhpur, Rajastan, India

Got to Jodhpur at 9pm last Monday after another uneventful train journey. Tuk Tuk driver didn't know where our hotel was and he took is to the wrong place, a place that looked too pricey for us. To cut a long story short, we ended up getting a really nice room in a good hotel for less than 10 euro a night. After we settled into the room we decided to go out for something to eat. We had a place in mind and asked a tuk tuk driver to take us. When we got there, the tuk tuk driver and his mate sa...

Jodhpur

We rolled into Jodhpur in the morning, having taken the overnight train from Agra. We did book that train ticket when we were still in Orchha, just to make sure we had the date we wanted. Our first overnight train experience went surprisingly well. We had AC2 class, which are the berths that have curtains as doors, instead of doors as doors. I slept pretty well, only woke up a couple of times. Tony didn't fare so well. At the train station, we were surrounded by rickshaw drivers. We had our h...

into the desert of india

It has taken me a long time to finally get to India. It has always been a mystery to me, and somehow a place I never had at the top of my list. I have to say, after being here for almost a week up here in the desert, it is reminding me ALOT (landscape, mud houses...)of Mauritania. All the busy streets and the amount of people everywhere make me realize how lucky we were in Mauritania to experience a place untouched by tourism. I have signed up on a group tour, which I have never done before a...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Krishna Prakash Heritage Jodhpur

Newly renovated, old haveli

from burwenj
So I'm closing up on three nights here at the KP Heritage, and it's been excellent. They just renovated this haveli, and it's immaculate and beautiful and full of open-air, marble-floored terraces that give you solid views and a great atmosphere to relax. Ashish, the manager, is reasonable and quick to accomodate, and all the guys who work there are friendly, especially Sonny. And the guests, while all foreigners, are a good mix from all over the world, not just one language on the premises!

I stayed in the cheapest room, which gave me a room on the bottom floor with two twin beds and my own spotless bathroom with hot water, plus a towel. It was quiet and just what I needed to return to after running around Jodhpur all day. I had no view, but with all the terraces, I only went to my room to sleep or shower.

Food is decent and I would especially recommend the Thali--if you speak Nepali, though, the kitchen crew will like you lots. Internet connection is excellent. They also give a lot of other serivces, but the best part is the fact that they go 24 hrs a day! (i.e. midnight snacks are available)

The Fort is in your face, practically right in front of the place! A 15 min walk puts you at the entrance, so you can beat all the crowds without having to wake up so early.

As of now, they're planning on adding a swimming pool and underground "disco" in the next year, so if you're looking at this in 2007, check it out.

Dig it, kids. Worth your while if you can get the cheap room. The expensive ones look great too, but I didn't stay in them. A rickshaw from the train station shouldn't be more than 25 Rs. It's not listed, but you can see more pics and info at --.

OK - will be nice when it's finished

from dwne
Nice room, very friendly and helpful staff. However there was a lot of building work going on which created noise and mess round the clock. Haveli is lovely - I'm sure it will be great when finished.

Don't trust the other reviews - they're fake.....

from AJacques
This Hotel is awfull.... We've booked directly from the internet as we trusted the 'tripadvisor' reviews, but unfortunately, as we arrive, we're confronted with a pestilent and extremely non-higienic place.

The view to fort, and yes, the simpathy of the staff was good, but the scenario is way too sad to pay for it. It's a pity to stay in such place, when there are many others, much better, and for a very reasonable price...

I'm writing this down only a couple of hours from being there, because I really felt I should share this experience with the 'tripadvisor' community.

Now, I believe other reviews are not trustefull nad maybe were written by the Hotel staff, family and friends, otherwise I think it is impossible to rate it so well.

We're staying at 'Ajit Bhawan' now, which is very much better, but off course with a very different price too... That's what happens when things don't get as you expect and you are too tired to go find another place with an equivalent price, in a city you don't know nothing at all...

Hope you find it usefull. Good luck...

Great example of hospitality

from m.loonker
The KP Haveli is located at foot of Mehrangarh Fort in Nayabas Killikhana at Jodhpur. You will start to feel welcomed since the very beginning upon your arrival. One of the things that I liked the most was the royal welcome from the staff in traditional manner. With kukku-tikki, safa and garlands. what else one can expect more than this really royal welcome and welcoming attitude. An example for other hotels in India.

Staying at this hotel was quite an experience. Not only for having a great infrastructure and wonderful service, but because we could really feel what was a caring staff when one of our group members had a minor accident and everyone helped us go through the panic process in the most caring and efficient way I have ever seen. Try their restaurant, say thanks to Vish at the door-a blast of a guy that will make you laugh till the end of your trip; and say hi to the reception guys, and have a nice conversation with their concierge. Count on them as your support group, and don't forget to pamper yourself at this great place. No words can ever say how a group of people can turn an unfortunate event into an opportunity to enjoy the surroundings and even meet new friends. Great example of hospitality.

Nice place for recommendation

from fndarcy
The KP Haveli doesn't look anything like a hotel from the outside (actually, when you come to think of it, it doesn't really look much like one on the inside either); it looks like a big bungalow, all quiet and calm, completely devoid of the bustle and the din of a busy hotel. Killikhana is a quiet area, with narrow avenues, birds singing in the trees, and houses with pretty lawns -- all a far cry from the dust of city. KP Haveli is much like that -- a nice quiet place where you can unwind at your own pace.

The hotel, even on the inside, is very practical all the way. The lobby had a counter, some sofas and a currency exchange board on the freshly-painted wall; the staircase going up to the rooms was clean and had some beautiful old pictures. Our room, a large airy double room, was squeaky clean -- freshly laundered sheets, clean curtains, well-polished wooden furniture, a neatly tiled bathroom. Everything heartfully done and all amazingly neat and very clean.

The room had a telephone, room service, running hot and cold water and even a colour television with satellite channels. Upstairs, a big restaurants served meals. The views from terrace are beautiful offering full fort view, jaswant thada, clock tower, umaid bhawan and blue city itself. The garden on the roof made the ambience more beautiful and place more relaxing. We ordered tea and snacks twice through room service, and the service was very quick and efficient -- and this at a time when the hotel was full to the brim.

On the whole, this is a place I'd recommend for anybody looking for quiet, comfy accommodation with heritage feeling. The facilities are adequate, the staff's friendly, and it's good value for money.

Good food & helping family

from maiteolndriz
Having just wandered down from the fort, it was just by chance that we all decided we needed food and drink as we were standing outside the KP Heritage Haveli. Up several flights of stairs that took us through the accommodation part of the guesthouse, we reached the roof, where we had a choice of a shaded terrace overlooking the town or an open rooftop terrace up one more flight. The view of the fort from here was outstanding, so we opted to sit in the sun and drink freshly squeezed orange juice and nibble beautiful cheese pakora. The terrace is a great place for taking photographs, not only of the fort that looms above your head, but also the wonderful mosaic of the surrounding blue houses.

It's probably a bit misleading to describe the menu as being purely Indian, as we discovered that Mrs Mathur loves to learn recipes from around the world and actively encourages guests to teach her dishes from their home countries (she herself have travelled to several countries and learned dishes of those respective countries). Consequently, there are dishes from different parts of the world on the menu, as well as a variety of Indian foods. There is also a note on the menu that says that if there's something you would like that is not shown, then ask and they will try to provide.

The guesthouse has only been open for 2 years or so, and Prof. Mathur, a retired management professor, and his family (with links to earstwhile royal family) all work together to provide a number of services for guests. While waiting for your meal, it is possible to have an ayurvedic head massage in one of the pleasantly appointed guest rooms. Or, should you be interested in the history of Jodhpur, particularly the British colonial period, Prof. Mathur has an impressive collection of memorabilia and photographs from this period. One of us was quite keen to see this collection, so we arranged to return for dinner in the evening.

We ordered a mixture of Indian dishes and sat in the rapidly cooling air on the terrace, enjoying the smells from the kitchen and the night view of the town. The food was excellent and the service very attentive. The temperature, however, was freezing. We hadn't returned to our hotel on the outskirts of town, and so were dressed for the heat of the day. On asking if it would be possible to borrow a blanket, one of the lads from the guesthouse was immediately dispatched to the bowels of the building and returned with what seemed to be the entire collection of family shawls for us. Some of them were of the highest quality, and we were moved by the kindliness shown as we were bundled up in the family's finery. It was the combination of good food and great hospitality that found us returning to the guesthouse a number of times during our stay in Jodhpur. I would also recommend the place in terms of the accommodations as well. They were clean and offered for a good value, and it was central to everything.

Oasis in Blue City

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a excellent stay at KP Haveli, Jodhpur and were well looked after by the helpful and attentive staff. We arrived late after leaving the Yogi Guest House in disgust and were given a spacious, clean room.

I was unwell, and the staff bent over backwards to get a doctor promptly, and helped us get my prescription.

The restaurant staff were polite and friendly and the food was delicious. Excellent roof-top views too.

We fel safe and secure, and the staff were geniune and didn't hassle us.

We highly recommend this special oasis to everybody travelling to Jodhpur.

Excellent place for recommendation

from A TripAdvisor Member
Dear Friends, I lead a fairly nomadic life and stay in hotels and guest houses in several countries. I suppose I am used to sleeping in different beds every few nights, wake up in different surroundings and I suppose a guest house / hotel is pretty much just a means to get my head down and go to sleep. I hopefully also get a decent breakfast in the morning. I am not really worried what the establishment is like as long as it's clean, comfortable and the management and staff are at least friendly and helpful. But there was something about KP Heritage, Jodhpur which set it apart from other places I have stayed in.

I discovered it quite by accident the day I arrived in Jodhpur, which was Sunday, 15th January, 2006! It's how I discover most places on the present trip to India as I am touring the country without a guidebook. I have used guidebooks before and I rather enjoy trying to prove them wrong. As soon as the auto brought me into the front courtyard to KP Heritage, I knew I had fallen in love with the place and I would be really happy there. It has a lovely old world Rajasthani style and one feels like one is already in the Mehrangarh Fort, as it rises, imposing the above one as one goes through the hotel. The choice of rooms is wonderful. They are all spacious, airy and comfortable, and the garden which is right in the middle of the ground floor, where my room is situated is a wonderful place to relax, enjoy some tea, coffee, fruit juice and in the evening have something stronger.

The rooftop restaurant has a great choice of meals and one has from it an excellent view, not only of the fort, but of the Jaswant Thada and a fair bit of the old city. All that is missing is a choice of desserts, ice-cream etc. But I suppose one can get those from a corner shop virtually around the corner. I had a great stay here and the atmosphere is really friendly as it is also familial. I wish the guest house and its management staff the very best as it is also a fairly new business venture and will highly recommend it further. I hope this recommendation will help the future visitors for Jodhpur.
