Autumn to winter in one train journey!

... was packed as well, so we couldn't even move :-( Then, after setting off, the guard announced over the tannoy that upgrades were available for 90 kroner (about Ł9) Comparatively, train travel in Norway is really cheap compared to everything else there. It only cost us about Ł20 for our original (bought in advance) tickets.

When the guard came round, we asked for the upgrade, and ended up with a 4 ...

Voss... extreme sport capital of the world!

... who white water raft regard the rapids in Voss some of the best in the world, and for us mere amatures this was only just becoming apparent why!

So we turn up about 9am and get kitted out with wetsuit, lfe jacket and helmet, before all pilling into a bus and heading for the 30 minute drive up the side of a mountain watching as the cliffs drop away from the side of the road. The roads became that narrow in parts on coming cars were reversing so we could pass and the bus was ...

Voss, Flåm, Nærøyfjord...what was that last one?

... cannot miss it when cruising through town. It was built in 1277 by King Olav who forced christianity on the Vikings of the region. Haugo Utleige sat up on a hill overlooking part of Voss and had a ski chalet feel to it. But what really made it stand out was the deck that had a stunning view of the the town of Voss and the fjord below. The best and somewhat strangest part of travleing is negotiating the groceries.

Voss

Across valleys and cascades to Voss

... The train starts its journey in the town of Fläm (300 meters above sea level) and finishes at Myrdal (1800 meters above sea level). In Myrdal we take a modern train that takes us to Voss along Aurland Fjord. Voss is a very small town and our hotel has a sort of beach just on the front. Bathing would be crazy because of the cold weather, but walking and sitting on the sand is very relaxing.

Bergen - Norway in a Nutshell - Voss

... spot for lunch in the sun almost made up for the truly awful food! Not really much to see in Flam apart from the view, so eventually wandered over to the hotel & enjoyed afternoon tea at their cafe, thankfully nicer than lunch.

Train departed at 1600 for the steep & (again) spectacular trip up into the mountains. Again the crowds were a little frustrating - long lines to board, pushing & shoving as everyone tried to grab the ...

The West Coast: Heck Yes for Bergen!!

... to get there (especially in pouring rain), but definitely worth it. I admit that I'm not familiar with Grieg's music, but I have definitely heard of him before and looked forward to seeing his house. It's not a big home, but decorated with excellent taste and very Norwegian. It was really cool to see some of his original manuscripts (is that the right word?), the hytta (the hut) where he did his writing, and to see the vault where he and his wife Nina are buried. Troldhaugen and ...

What rain?

... I explored Bergen quite thoroughly by foot and decided that I could quite happily live there...if it wasn't for the expense and the apparent rain (275 days per year). It had a nice atmosphere, again the sun probably helped, and I particularly enjoyed walking around the old streets of Bryggen near the harbour. The unique, wooden houses were added to Unesco's World heritage List in 1979, and it made a change from the high rise buildings that are usually associated with cities.

troll fjorden (this bird has flown)

... Unfortunately, the rain was back so not as good a view of things. Bergen is a neat town on the west coast and referred to as the 'gateway to the fjords' since lots of cruises and tours leave from here. It has an old town area called Bryggen with many very old buildings (slanting). Bryggen I took the train to Flĺm and then a ferry to Gudvangen through the Nćrřyfjorden. It wasn't as impressive as Geirangerfjord, but had more Fall colors so that ...
