... The final part of our tour was a walk through the main city centre of Heraklion- with its old historic buildings, lovely Orthodox Church, fountains and modern day brand name shops! Lance and Liam managed to add to their haul with a couple of large Greek warriors. God knows how overweight we will be on our trip home. Finished the day with an evening spent at the back of the ship watching the sun go down, and eating from the buffet which for once wasn't too ...

... This hotel is much larger and more typical to the U.S. than our previous hotels. We just dropped off our bags and went for another two hour drive to Lasithiti Plateau. Lasithiti Plateau is located inland and at a much higher elevation than Heraklion and is a series of twenty tiny villages. My schedule is to stop on Santorini for a couple of hours--just to say I did, and because everyone will ask me if I did--then make the hop to Naxos, putting me "home" sometime this evening. That'll give me plenty of time tomorrow to souvenir shop and deliver authentic Naxian goods to America.

... Very pleased with those purchases. I also get a chance to walk around the old harbour. The buildings there are closed for renovation so I couldn't go inside, but it was a nice relaxing way to end the Cretan visit. I do have to say here that this harbour would rival the York Moors for kindness. Holy ****. So windy walking down the harbour road - almost blew my wig off!

And that is it from Crete. Next stop, Rhodes.

... phone and tried to Google my way out (reception this high up is actually workable). I couldn't find a trail map, but someone did write something to the effect of "the trail goes up, then down into the plateau, then back up again." Fair enough, down I go.

I realized fairly quickly, though not quickly enough, that, if there is a path, that wasn't it. It was an unmanicured, treacherous, "swing the messenger bag around and climb down" affair. ...
