Hours disappeared as I loaded barrow after barrow, then created a compost heap from the leaves, horse manure, hay, and composted kitchen waste; Emily had said to layer it as though I was creating a lasagne, but the slimy, pungent creation wasn’t anything I’d serve in a kitchen.
