Day 1 - Travel to Hong Kong, Hotel, Meeting Family

We made it to Hong Kong FINALLY! We had all sorts of funny, interesting, and scary things happen to us on the way. We both took off of work on Wednesday with the best intentions of being able to take our time packing but still able to leave for Atlanta at a reasonable hour. Well I have to admit that I was stalling all day long - I didn't want to leave my babies at home. To make things worse, they were getting in the suitcases as if to say that they didn't want us to go either. I cried when we...

Day 2 - Dim Sum, HK Park, Star Ferry, Shopping

After only 4 hours of sleep, we started the day off with a wonderful breakfast dim sum style. We met my aunt and uncle at the restaurant and were quickly seated. The food started arriving at our table almost as quick in either bamboo steamers or bowls which are delivered by women pushing carts around the restaurant. We had so many different dishes - most of which I can neither name nor spell correctly. About the only 3 that I can safely identify are the shark fin soup, pickled radish pastrie...

Day 3 - Dim Sum, Lantau Island, Aberdeen, Stanley

We started off the day with Dim Sum again. We tried our hardest to pick things that we had not previously tried. We were successful for the most part however we did haveto have beer again. That's just weird for us but when in Rome do as the Romans do so to speak. We then boarded the subway to Lantau Island. Thank goodness for us it goes out that way now. Previously you had to take a 2 hour ferry ride out there. The subway only took about 25 minutes. We rode the Ngong Ping cable car all the w...

Day 4 - Wedding Details, Escalators, Victoria Peak

We started the day off bright and early with no breakfast since we had to get to the marriage registration office on HK Island to take care of our final document verification. Things went surprisingly smooth and easy. I walked out of there with a huge sense of relief. I also vowed at that point to not walk anywhere else unless I can see my destination from where I am standing. For $15-$20 in most cases, you can get dropped off exactly at your desired location, not get lost, and save your poo...

Day 5 - Wedding, Dinner

Well the big day finally arrived. I had to get up early and just have pastries for breakfast before heading to the salon. My mom and I had to be there at 9. I was there for hair, manicure, pedicure, and make-up (although at the time I wasn't sure that the make-up was going to work out). They started working on my hair and nails at the same time which made it quite efficient. While they were doing that both the concierge and the salon receptionist were working on finding a make-up artist for ...

Hong Kong

After a 14 hour plane ride from Seattle we finally arrived in Hong Kong. We rushed out of the airport, took the express train, and headed to the pier at Victoria Harbour to see the symphony of light show. Not quite as spectacular as we heard, but a great way to start our trip in Hong Kong. Next we found our hotel, checked in, cleaned up, then hit the town. We stayed on the kowloon side of Hong Kong which is a bit busy, but the streets are full of people, stores, bars and plenty of eateries. W...

A case of mistaken identity

Is this confusing as this relates to Oct 2nd but I'm writing it Oct 3rd I am aware that not everybody starts their 'round the world' (or even 'half way there and back') experience in a five star hotel, however not everybody has Ian booking the accommodation on the back of his sales bonus at the Kowloon Shangri-La. Having said that, I'm not sure it was his accomodation we got after all... After a delayed flight to London and a slightly delayed 11 hour flight to Hong Kong we arrived, sans lugga...

Short break for a conference in Hong Kong. Stayed at the beautiful Shangri La Kowloon (www.shangri-la.com) , well located and real 5 star services. Despit my great conference, I will recommend several things: - Shopping: prices are similar to Dubai, so not impress my technology. Shall you like to buy gadget, you rahter go to Dragon Maart, one of the chinese area in Dubai (Near International City). - Suits: very good deal, i went outside of the hotel, ans was apporached by an indian man. 5 Star Living

Day 1 I arrived in Hong Kong around 11 AM. I took the train into the city. That in itself was such an experience. The trains were amazingly clean and efficient. They even had flat screen televisions in every car. It made the trains in Chicago look really nasty. They even had a screen that showed your progression and announced the stops in quite a few languages. I don't think that they could have made it any easier for the foreign passengers. I got off at the train station and took a cab ride ...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong

Unbelievable

from astonmartinv8
Probably the best experience ever. Bought a full price club floor room as it included airport transport and late check out (as well as free laundry). Got to airport after 12 hour flight at 9am, went straight to hotel desk in airport. Whisked to a nearly new Mercedes S-Class. Water and cold towels. Straight to Kowloon. Car door opened by man with clipboard. "Welcome to Kowloon Shangri-La Mr+Mrs Wright - please follow me". Escorted to Club Floor check in on 21st floor I think - no delay. Checked in and in bed for top-up sleep by 10am. Up at 1pm excellent corner room with fantastic harbour view. Only equalled by Island Shangri-La. We have stayed in many top hotels - this was the best. Even got a voucher for a further free stay as we had paid top dollar.

Great Hotel but watch out for the phone fee

from janeeyre
I recently stayed here for two nights on a business trip. The rooms are huge, with amenities aplenty (lavender shampoo, remote control cutains, free bottled water!). The Kool Cafe on the mezzanine has a good breakfast (skip the buffet and order a la carte), the lobby is spacious and comfortable.

The staff are about as attentive as any I've even seen. My bags practically got to my room before I did, the "welcome tea" was close behind. I never had to open a door and everyone behind the reception desk adressed me by name when I appeared.

A few complaints - 1) the area around the hotel (tsim sha tsui) is undergoing a lot of constuction, which makes walking around rather inconvenient. Normally the location of the hotel is perfect for exploring (near the mtr and the ferry).

2) a fee of $HK20 (about $4 US) is added onto every phone call you make from your hotel room, even if you use a calling card. This is a huge annoyance especially for a business person who needs to make a lot of calls.

This is a lovely hotel with a great location, but I am sorry to say I think it was a little pricey considering the location of other hotels. Staff were very nice and I cannot fault the view in my room after I asked for an upgrade which was a little difficult to get. I think if I stayed again I would insist on a river view or go to another hotel. I am being picky as this still is a lovely hotel.

Wonderful

from sigmund
We stayed 5 nights on vacation in March 2005 in an executive harbour view room. We had paid "only" £126 per night and feared the room would be small - a common feature of Hong Kong hotels according to our guide book. Instead we found ourselves in a wonderfully large, luxuriously appointed room with a fantastic view of the harbour (only available on the Kowloon side). We arrived at close to midnight but the check-in was faultless and the concierge attentive. We were also presented with a complimentary tea and fruit bowl. Complimentary water and tea/coffee facilities were provided each night The sumptuous hotel lounge offers great, if expensive, drinks with nightly entertainment . The hotel is located away from the frenetic tourist streets - for which we were thankful - but is still very convenient for the main attractions and excellent public rail network. The Shangri-La is of the best luxury hotels we have stayed in (and at our age we have tried a few) - and a bargain at the price. Very strongly recommended.

Absolutely fantasic hotel, what views!

from lertyui
We have just returned from our trip to Hong Kong as part of our honeymoon. We were staying over the Chinese new year celebrations and were lucky enough to have harbour view room which is an absolute must have in this hotel. The room was wonderful, floor to ceiling window with very high quality finishes. On new years eve we had a window table in their Napa Restaurant with birds eye views of their incredible firework displays.

The staff at the hotel were very attentive and its location very good for all manners of Hong Kongs transport systems. Live classy music in the lobby everyday made your return to the hotel very welcoming. Their little touch in the lifts, where each day the mats were changed with the correct day of the week to remind you what day it was, was very nice particularly when you have a little jet lag!

It made a very memorable part of our honeymoon and will certainly be returning in the very near future.

Great location, great views

from Kendo
We stayed at Kowloon Shangri la for 4 night just after Xmas 03.

The hotel is in a great location - only a couple of minutes walk fronm the high speed ferry to HK island and 15 minutes walk to Star Ferry and Nathon Road area.

Our room was spacious and comfortable with a huge picture window giving breathtaking views of HK harbour - this was worth the trip on it's own.

Big soacious marble bathroom and all mod cons. Attentive and friendly staff and decent range of restaurants and nice bar area mad this a greta experience. We would definatly stay here again on return to HK and would highly ereccomend it. We can be a bit picky and hard to please but we thought it was one of (of not the) best hotels we have stayed in.

Fantastic Hotel

from snowyshome
We stayed here as part of our honeymoon in the Far East. Awesome harbour view room with full floor to ceiling panoramic view of the harbour. This is definitely the best side to stay on as the view is much better from Kowloon. Very centrally located - few minutes walk to the Star Ferry and Underground. Plenty of good restaurants within 10 mins walk. Room was huge plus one of best bathrooms I've ever seen. Fantastic lobby - extremely helpful concierge and doormen. Couldn't fault this hotel, would definitely stay here again. They even change the carpets in the lifts every morning to say what day of the week it is - nice touch when you're on holiday and lose track of the days!!

One of the best in Kowloon

from MemberfromPadova
Although not as perfect as the Island Shangri-La, it is definitely one of the best hotel I have been to and my favourite when in HK. The view on the harbour is stunning. The service is wonderful and rooms have everything you may wish to make your staying the most comfortable possible. The Chinese restuarant at the lower lobby is said to be one of the best in HK. I quite agree.

Breathtaking Views!

from KateandSteve
Very plush, beautiful decor, super service. They upgraded us to a harbour view..totally stunning with large floor to ceiling picture windows. Not cheap! We had an argument over a room service bill on which they failed to honour one of their own special offers! We won in the end but it took some badgering to get them to alter our bill! The view is worth the money and it's within easy walking distance of Nathan Road.
