    ... and just 6 miles or so from Italy, we stopped at a great stone fort that was used by the Italians in the 15th century to fight the Ottoman invasion, and then ironically by the Austrians to repel the Italians in the 1st World War. Sheer drop on one side, sheer cliff on the other with ladder rungs affixed to the cliff face (see photo) that allowed soldiers to quickly get to the mountain top, a very dramatic site, full of history.     ... the manmade access tunnel into the underground system, and upon arriving at the main entry the large group was split into 3. We were in the second group. Once underground we entered the dry cavern of the system as the river doesn't flow through it. The cavern was fairly large and had a fair share of stalagmite/tite formations.     ... grass and apples along the way however on the way home my horse unexpectedly decided to bend down to grab a fallen apple. Funny thing was, I was holding onto the reins firmly and almost got pulled forward off the horse! Luckily I was riding at the back so no one saw this happen.
