I met Albena last Christmas, she is married to Rick Harper a Washington National Guard Soldier and contractor at Fort Lewis. They had had moved from Virgina, and Albena was not yet working and had not met many people.
She grew up in the beautiful coastal city of Varna Bulgaria, and all her family was still there. She tries to visit once a year and I begged her to let me tag along. She was gracious enough to conceed and we had a wonderful time.

... a "seller". I asked him what he sold..."fruit?" "vegetables?" I offered... he looked confused and repeated that he was "a seller". I, thinking he was deaf, offered the possibility that perhaps he sold "clothes". He looked even more confused and started reeling off the names of towns: "Liverpool, Dublin, London, etc" A sailor, he was a sailor. No wonder he looked confused, the very idea of sailing a banana!!
We cycled out of Varna across a two-kilometre, four-lane ...

The GDP is amongst the lowest in the EU but it has risen since entering the EU and the standard of living has risen visibly since 2000.
WWII Bulgarian Govt was by necessity in league with Nazi Germany, but plans for Jews to be deported were uncovered and there were major protestsso the plans were abandoned. All the Jews in Bulgaria were saved and there is now a monument in Israel to thank the Bulgarian people.
A very nice place and quiet resort, is ideal target for family with kids, food and drinks very cheap and the people are friendly. About the security reasons I saw all the time the officers from Security companies -armed- and Police patrols on the street, here you need just to choose the proper location and enjoy the time.
Oh Varna.
Life passes in a haze of beachy days and beach bar-y nights, and really there is not much else. After a week on the farm in Palamatsa, it's so nice to be here on the beach, relaxing with the hundreds of Brits, Aussies, Bulgarians, and even some Americans that find their way to Varna 'for a few days.' This is funny because so many people we met said, 'we came for 3 days and have been here for 3 months.' Woah guys, it's nice, but there are other nice places too ...
... us all out at 9.30 to go and drink on the beach together.
We really haven't seen anything in Varna just sat on the beaches during the day and drunk at night time. We have in the end enjoyed our time here in Varna just there aren't many stories to tell or write about, it was just like hanging out with our mates from home. We didn't even manage to take a single photo.
To Istanbul we go.

Nessebar to Golden Sands (near Varna) Bulgaria
Sunny 30 degrees
We left lovely Nessebar and drove north to the seaside resort of Golden Sands, near Varna. We knew it was going to be difficult to find the hotel as we only had vague directions and no GPS map for the area. We thought we were in the right area and asked our first local for directions who told us that there had been a landslide ...
Due to the Cold War being over and the world seems to a much more settled place now, Russia has an over abundance of FSB officers with nothing to do. So, as not to have them wandering about the workplace with nothing to do, the Russian Government has rented out these ...
Balchik, Dobrich, Bulgaria scottik38Woke up to a great sunny morning after a good night's sleep. Damyan and Erina were already up, planning our trip. We decided to go to Balchik, a small town on the Black Sea coast where a Summer Palace was built for Queen Marie of Romania in around 1926 when Romania had control of this region. Beautiful gardens also surround the Summer Palace covering an area of about 65,000 square metres and has over 2000 species of plants growing ...
