'Tis the season to be sunburned ....

... with a river running throughout it, then facing on to the sea. We spent the first day there kayaking on the river (what a way to get big guns - my arms were killing me by the time I'd just crossed the river once!), which was amazing, and the second at the beach where there were the biggest waves I've seen yet, and walking around the coastal path which is part of the national park - it was so pretty. The whole place was kind of like the Australian version of the OC - massive cars ...

The year Captain Cook landed here.

... barrier
reef starts. The island is named after a governors wife who held amazing tea parties, apparently. when not many people lived in Oz, people felt lonely and isolated so making them a cuppa and having some games was a nice thing to do. We left the campsite about 6.30am, and there were lots of kangaroos sat on the street outside. We just walked past them while they stared at us. You can only usually see them early in the morning, its so weird to see them sat in ...

Harley's, Goats and a lawn bowling tournament!

... ouch. Luckily for Kroombit, they made us sign about 5 disclaimers before we started the evening's activities. More games and drinking pursue, before we retire to our hut, I feel like I have been asleep for about an hour, before we are awoken by what sounds like a shot gun. We stumble out still grubby and scarred from the night before, but with no time to shower, there is a cowboy cooking up our beans and toast for us, brilliant! We then hop on the bus for the epic ...

Everybody go surfing......

... out it was loads of fun and not as hard as I thought it would be to stand up, although to be fair we were practising on baby waves but all the same, we both managed to stand up plenty of times! It was really hard work though, the day after we both ached lots and had bruises on our legs (weirdly James had one on his chin - seemed he used it to keep himself on the board all the time) Great fun though, will def be doing that again in Noosa and Byron Bay, although I ...

Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef (PICTURES!)

Magical.

Swam with giant turtles, stng rays and all manner of tropic fish and saw whales and dolphins too. Brilliant fun and much better than when I went to the GBR from Cairns. The set up was superior here, only 45 minute boat journey then you dock at a pontoon wth tables and chairs etc and go ...

... the waves for the last few days they are so random. In that there wasn't really any consistency there would be a few little waves that would be below my head height and then bam there was one that would be 10 feet. I'm not sure how waves are measured in height but I'm basing it on me being over 6 ft and then having to jump and still getting cleaned out by the wave as my method of height (the water was lower than shoulders and above belly button before the waves would come in ...

... did say to do a more simple way of getting to your feet and explained a few other good bits of gen. I found it a little tricky to start with as the board was a little shorter and narrower so it was a little bit more unstable but after a while I started to find the balance point and ride some of the waves like a complete wannabe pro. I still managed to do some awesome wipe outs, including belly flopping in about 6 inches of water ...

Kinka Beach to 1770; that's a place, not a number!

... a year, but doing it all in her van. This looks pretty much like ours from the outside, but blue. However inside she has just fitted basic shelves right at the back, ‘this is my kitchen’, and then she just seems to have piled all her belongings in to the rest of the van, creating a layer about three feet deep, on top of which she and her two dogs sleep! Whilst I was talking to her, she was busy rummaging through heaps of stuff under her bedding, saying ...

The rest of my time here has been filled with bonfires, sunbathing by the pool and most importantly chilling with the hostel people, anyone who says there’s nothing to do here isn’t looking in the right places! But today it’s time once again to board the greyhound and move on to the next place, which this time in Great Keppel island for some more snorkel adventures. Only 7 weeks of exploring left to go...

Pommies are the only ones driving when it's dark

Paradise was over and had to make our long journey back down to the Sunshine Coast. We made great time going back so we went to visit the nice little coastal town of Yeppoon but there was nowhere to stay so we decided to stay in Rockhampton but the campsite was rubbish and expensive for the ...
