Day Trip to Ancient, Ancient Greece

... and descriptions of landmarks to find the ancient city and excavate it.

When you visit Mycenae now, what you see is some pretty well-preserved foundations of the city walls and rooms within the walls. We got to walk through the ancient city and go past regular homes, shops, and even the kings’ quarters. We saw the huge grave circles where most of the treasures were found (now mainly exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens ...

Day Trip

... while we at the theater, there was an archaeological dig going on just a few feet away. I don’t know if they had found anything at that point in the dig but it looked like an area where they could have come across some interesting artifacts.

Epidavros is most famously known for its theater but there are also remains of an ancient healing sanctuary. All you see today is rubble all over ...

Epidavros or Bust

... a meterorite impact as local legend has it.

Our final stop was the 'cave of Franchithi' which turned out to be on the coast near Koladia - and I got no further as it was straight into the sea to cool off! All that was left was to load up at Lidl in Kranidi with enough long life provisions to last a considerable chunk of the rest of the season, squeeze in Andy's favourite DiaBrau lager and home to collapse. A grand day out!

... flew from Athens but I imagine this is what the ferry people must see since that's what it looks like from the postcards! =) Highly recommend flying given it was a painless 30mins from athens compared to the possibility of cancellations/delays with the ferries. The other towns include Oia (otherwise known as home to the sea-captains in the past), Firostefani, Imerovigli and of course the beaches of which Kamari is the most famous (for its black sand ...

We made it to Santorini, Greece!

... road at a local Greek taverno, and had freshly caught fish and calamari, with Greek salads. The woman running this restaurant is from Germany and came to Santorini years ago on vacation and never went home. We called it a night early as we had been on quite the journey. Tomorrow we will load onto our 4-wheeler and see where she takes us! Today's walk: 4.3 miles Total for the journey (261 miles, 51 days) Love, Laurie and Ryan

Greek Week IV

No trip to Greece is complete without a view of the famous and beautiful Greek Islands, so on Friday we took a one-day cruise to Hydra, Aegina and Poros. All amazing. Cats, dogs, pistachios, gelato, donkeys, mo-peds. You know, the works. I drove a mo-ped and instantly felt WAY cooler than ever. By the time we had to pack up and head home to London, we were ready for 56 Prince's Gate home, and the English language but it was definitely a ...

A day in the airport

Today was a rather dead day. It started out interesting though. We had a 7:20am flight from Santorini to Athens. So we set our alarm for 5:30am, giving us enough time to pack up and head to the airport an hour before our departure time. Last night, I was feeling a bit nervous about us potentially not getting up. So I set four ...

Athens Olympics

... a bench and waited for life to reemerge. I might as well continue with Tuesday since technically, it was Tuesday... TUESDAY We got our boarding passes and cleared the security check. It was even more barren on this side of the airport than the other. Julie pulled up a piece of bench and tried unsuccessfully to get a few winks of sleep. As the time passed, the terminal got more and more lively. There were tons of people wearing the same t-shirt, celebrating their favorite Olympic ...
