Eating here in Slovenia can be a rather adventurous affair. Evening meals are not normally a problem because an English version of a printed menu can be found and what you get is pretty close to the description. However lunchtimes can be different with Rok often translating the menu into English. Normally this works ok but today it was going slightly bonkers.
"This one is young beef" says Rok
"Young beef? Thats veal, yes?"
Rok shrugs his shoulders "I guess"
"Whats next?" ...
Nothing spectacular today, work, eat, snooker, hotel, sleep
Whoever said that international working was glamourous? What a day today.
Rok picked me up at 7am because we got stuck in traffic yesterday and we are starting at 8am with a 20 min journey from the hotel to do. Bear in mind that I am an hour behind this on my body clock so I am getting up at 5am to start work at 7!
The schedule today is very full and by the time we are done its 8pm before we leave the office. I am feeling a little on the tired side shall we say.
More menu translations today as Fried Cheese made an appearance. Now I'm pretty certain that we have the upper hand with Fried Mars Bars but Fried Cheese sounded like it could run a close second.
It is as the name suggests, a slab of cheese about the size of a slice of bread and thick enough to rival a slice from an Extra Thick loaf is coated in fine breadcrumbs and fried. It is served with fried potatoes. Not one for the health concious then.

Hi everyone! When I last wrote we were heading to Ljubljana. Well, we got there safe and sound after a gorgeous train ride through mountains and snow. We had no idea the train would be going through mountains at all so when the scenery starting changing so drastically, we just glued our heads to the window and watched as we went higher and higher. We saw snow on the mountain tops and then ended up seeing snow flurries. Eventually we were at the highest point the train could go ...
Ljubljana, Slovenia mdaa... met someone who talked about himself so much! He bigged himself up
about everything..! Boring.. should have just watched him instead! We
then realised he is the first person we have spoken to on holiday! At
all the campsites its generally older foreigners. Everyone keeps
thinking we are German because of the German number plates on the van.
We headed out to town that night for ...
... pedestrians not welcome. after about ten minutes a random taxi drove by and we flagged him down. we were dropped off at our hotel, which did not have our booking :( ..but the lady at the reception was nice enough to drive us to the youth hostel. we went out to eat, having some yummy seafood at a local slovenian type bar-kzst jam-in restaurant. we tried to go out, but the pub crawl was lacking... so we went back to our ...
Ljubljana, Slovenia alyssa.amos... I had a tiny nibble off the side of the burger and struggled to swallow it. John took a whole mouthful and instantly regretted it!! Disgusting. We found some more palatable food before returning to the hostel. We had requested to rent some bikes for the day but we had to wait around in the lobby for over 30 minutes because of a group of Spanish idiots. They were complaining that their room was unfit for human habitation because it didn't have a hand rail on the ...
Ljubljana, Slovenia rbisset... bucketing down and my chain came off. So that little bit of enthusiasm was quickly doused and we hid for the rest of the day in a coffee shop with amazing flavoured hot chocolates and a melty honeycake thing which was devine. We also ran into Gemma and Emma from our Croatia cruise so we had a drink with them at a bar. It was a really nice, chilled, couple of days which we needed after our hectic week before.
Ljubljana, Slovenia annajura... the trip in a compartment with a Slovenian man. He asked us, in very broken English, where we were from. we replied, "America." He then asked, "where is that?" Annie and I were baffled. That is definitely a first. But after talking with him more, he then realized that America is where Chicago is, and proceeded to ask us about racial crimes in the city of Chicago. He was an interesting character. Lujbljana is a lovely city with ...
Ljubljana, Slovenia hannahb... skinned, stuffed with garlic and onion....mmmmmm. The following morning we ducked into Ljubljana for a quick look around. It is quite a cool little city, set on a river, with tons of cafes and stylish people cruising around checking each other out. We walked up to the castle, which was not that spectacular, had a quick bite to eat then hit the road for Trieste.
