Business

Enjoyed our meetings and colleagues. Went to dinner at a typical Guangdong/Canton restaurant. Menu was very creative. Plenty of exotics - baby pigeon, sting ray, fish guts, beetles, snakes, chicken feet. Was a bit naseous, but likely because of jet lag.

Guangzhou

Arrive after 11 pm and my company screws up the pick-up. 20 guys trying to sell me sim-cards are chasing me around baggage claim because I'm clearly not moving out. After an hour and deciding I won't be picked up, I bee-line for the first cab in lineup. The ...

The men in white suits....

Guangzhou was thankfully pretty uneventful except for this one little episode I thought I'd share...

Because of the 'swine flu' or H1N1 virus most of the border control areas scan your body as you walk through with your passport. I wouldn't have even noticed this had it not been for Ollie getting pulled aside for his very 'high temperature'. He was immediatley carted off while I had to go through immigration and wait for ...

Last day in Guangzhou

... others) so we went to a local hairstylist and for 40 yuans ($7 USD) I got a nice trim! We ventured to a few new stores we somehow missed (Hard to believe taht too) and caved in and got a stroller for Emma to tool around the island in. It's so hot for everyone to carry her - she really liked her first stroller ride too.

We had to finish up a couple last minute gifts for their friends, and exchange a dress for Emma that ...

The Final Night in China

I'm at the Guangzhou Airport (Baiyunport) waiting for my flight to Tokyo. My stay in China has come to an end. Yesterday we had sweet and sour pork for dinner. It didn't taste like sweet and sour but it was still good. There was also some more bread stuff from lunch. In the evening Beibei and I took the subway to a place by the Pearl River. We got on a two level boat and took a cruise down the Pearl ...

Marinating in Mediocrity

... been able to do that last one. We spent three hours after the post office looking at watches. Everything is either too thick, or too square, or too big, or too analogue, or the band is too flimsy, or it's just plain ugly. I just reread that last sentence. I'm not complaining about Jon. I fully agree with him. I'm trying to impress upon ou that the watches here are worthless, hideous, and, most likely, temporary wrist top adornments. I think we'll wait for 'Nam on ...

Saturday

Awoke in the morning to a great view of Hong Kong from my bedroom window. Ate an early breakfast then took a local bus to Kowloon Station. Kowloon is the stepping off point for China and you do all the formalities before boarding the train. Lots of people in the crowded train station and took a while to find the immigration and departure areas. Went through passport control, checked my bags in and hung around for the train to leave. Once the train ...
