... of water evaporated, was encapsulated by clay then lava, and later raised by tectonics into the mountain. The mine is still active, producing tons on salt every year by bore hole drilling technology and dissolution/evaporation methods. There were light shows, movies, pumping stations, slides to go down (!!), Europe's oldest staircase with a 3-D projection of what life was like when it was used, and then a train ride that took us out of the mine at the end. The whole thing took a couple ...

We were disappointed that it was so cloudy the day that we visited, so our photos do not show the true beauty of this magical place. However, some of the photos with the clouds hovering over the mountains and the lake are quite breathtaking. When we were ...

Day 25 - Bruck to St Johann

A travel blog entry by grmps on Oct 01, 2015

Just a wee jaunt planned for today. The master plan is to head for the " lake district" of Sound of Music fame. We looked at going to Salzburg and signing up for a 50th anniversary Sound of Music tour. Before all of this we're going to have a lazy day to take advantage of another ...

... in a complex with many others, dropped off our bags and went to tour Hallstatt. We both thought that it reminded us a bit of Leavenworth but with a very large lake bordering the village. Very touristy with what seemed like hundreds of Asian tourists. Most seemed very young and of course snapping pictures of everything. There was one woman taking pictures of the shelves at the grocery Store, What's up with that?

Tiny town nestled between the water and mountain

We do go from one extreme to another. This town is super tiny. It's here because salt used to mean big money and they had a salt mine. We will ride another funicular up the side of a mountain (a recurring theme with us) tomorrow to tour the mine. It was closed by the time we got to it today.
We left early and walked to the underground station which was literally 3 minutes from our hotel. So awesome we have small suitcases to ...
