... be using Highway 200 or Saddle Road - from the description in the book, this road sounds very dangerous to be on. Before heading for the big mountain, I make sure the car is filled up with gas and my stomach filled up with grub... and I can do that all in the nearby town of Waimea - Hawai'i 's own cowboy country... Yes, cowboys right here on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Imagine that!

... earlier Mailekini Heiau. John Young later converted it into a fort to protect the harbor. Just offshore is Hale o Kapuni, an underwater structure dedicated to sharks. A pōhaku (stone post) marks a spot where the feeding of the sharks could be viewed. Across the bay is the modern Kawaihae harbor.

There was another trail we wanted to do to see the petroglyphs, but it was too warm to do much walking and we really felt like doing some swimming ...

We drove to the Queen 's Marketplace to get some breakfast. The store had already made sandwiches, so we took some of those.

After breakfast we got in the car and drove to Kahalu'u Beach Park. Now that was an amazing experience! There were all these beautiful tropical fish and coral. It was a shallow bay and the water was very calm which made for excellent snorkeling.

We dried up a bit and we went ...

... we got out! Thankfully we were well prepared, although long johns, thick socks, combat trousers, vest, t-shirt, jumper, jacket and hat were still not enough... I had forgotten gloves and a scarf... We stopped at the visitor's center (about 9,000 feet up) to acclimatise to the altitude, and browse through a whole bunch of astronomy related souvenirs. We had hired a 4-wheel drive (essential) and we began the ascent up ...
