Just about 3 hours outside of Tokyo, we found our idyllic escape. The guidebook description alone was mouth-watering.
Hakone is a region popular among Tokyites (is this a word? If not, it should be) looking to escape the rat race for a day or more. Well up into the mountains, it boasts clean crisp air, lush forests, and a gorgeous alpine lake. Just what we were looking for.

Today started with a traditional Japanese breakfast which was not at all to my taste. Breakfast included -
Dried Japanese Horse Mackerel
Natto (Fermented soybeans)
Steamed rice and Miso ...
We set off early today to catch the train to Hakone.
It's nice to get out of the city and see some of the countryside.
We dropped our bags off at the hotel and had a look around the town. Then did what they call the Hakone round trip.
Caught the bus to Moto-hakone-ko
Boarded a pirate ship that went across Lake Ashi.
Took 2 ropeways
... Fuji. We were driven to our traditional ryokan where we were welcomed in and taken to our room, then given traditional robes to change into. We were served a katsekai dinner in our room which consisted of about ten courses. The highlight was when Jona spilled his beer over our entire table, and once we got that cleaned up I started having gag reflexes over some very chewy sashimi. The botanical garden in particular overwhelmed me with the breadth of natural beauty on display. Walking among reeds and flowers in an enormous sunlit field, I felt so keenly that I've been 'doing it wrong' with an endless slog of overtime hours and wasted PTO.
