There a lot of people spending a lot of time here so the atmosphere isn't that of other places. The staff however were amazingly friendly!

Feel grubby in the communal areas.

Early in the morning we check into the Koala Beach Resort in Cairns city center. Not an arbitrary choice but the third place we tried to find a vacancy, each time going up the price scale. Still not a bad place, but cost $70/nite Australian, and has a nice pool in the court yard. [GPS 16 55.197S 145 46.439E from the street in …

0700 pick up. We went to the gate and found Frenchman Jaja from the Drop Bear tour (Fraser Island) waiting for the same trip. We stood chatting waiting for the bus and then Christiane walked by!

Shane the tour guide picked us up from the hostel on a 27 seated bus that was nearly full by the last pick up. He …

5.30 am the Greyhound pulled into Cairns. I had pretty fat ankles and stiff legs, but I was in great spirits compared to grumpo Milnes who reported waking through the night every 10 minutes. I always bagsie the window so David only has me to lean on and my shoulders aren't the most comfortable, even with a blow up pillow. < …

... either!) but the cost, calories, and hangovers have been WELL worth it! We have met some INCREDIBLE people - many who we know we will keep in touch with in the future, and shared some fantastic times together! I think my favourite moment has to be driving along the 'amazingly beautiful Fraser Island' (as Chris our guide would say!) whilst listening to 'Cheerleader' at full volume in our 4 x 4 car, and all 8 of us (Bob Marley) singing along at the tops of ...
