... enough it left at 9:30 and again was rather uneventful, bar the border crossing which took forever! We waited for over an hour before anyone had even looked at our passports, and then had a thorough bag search. I was then made to sign a form presumably to say I had seen them carry out the bag check. ... is truly historical. There is the Stone Bridge dating to the 6th Century that crosses the Vardan river, an old Ottoman/Turkish quarter with a couple of surviving mosques, and a part of the destroyed railway station is preserved as a monument. Otherwise, it got the good old Eastern Bloc makeover of boxy, ugly, scary and outright hideous (see the Post Office, for example).

... back when making statues was a national past time, these are new ones that have been created to look old. As you walk around the centre of the city, you see huge statues of Macedonian Gods, pregnant mothers and other famous Macedonians (none who I knew nor know what they were famous for). These statues would not have looked out of place in any museum depicting the 8th or 9th Century and would have vied for attention with all the other great ...

... that area there were many roadside stalls selling vegetable products that are locally grown: watermelon and olives were some of the best sellers, and Fadil explained that the olives from Albania were particularly good. So as I mentioned, before this trip I knew nearly nothing about this part of the world.
