Auckland, New Zealand danielbower3New Zealand!!! I finally made it!!! I am currently in the biggest city in the country - Auckland. And at 1.2 million people, it's not even really that big. There's only 4 million people total, but there's 40 million sheep! And that's all in two islands that together make up the size of Colorado. The flight over here was quick...from Sydney it only took 2 ½ hours! I took a Chilean airline so everything was done in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. And the girl next to me was from Spain so I go...
Auckland, New Zealand jasiWalked through the oldest park around today, the Auckland Domain, circa 1845. Impressive New Zealand scenery. The view from the museum was cool.
Auckland, New Zealand jutkkOur first day with our new travelling companions, Chris's mum (Ann) and Aunt (Pat), started with a walking tour of Auckland. This took in a number of the historic and cultural buildings of the city including parks, university buildings, artwork and administration buildings in the city centre. It was an interesting tour, but possibly a little too much for our still travel worn friends. When we reached the van, I think everyone was glad of the rest on the journey north. We travelled as far as K...
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand nick.maynardHey everyone! Well i'm finally here after a stupidly long flight, spent at least 27hours travelling and i don't plan on getting on another plane any time soon! I'm staying at the Kiwi International Hostel, which seems ok so far but very quiet! There only seems to be about 10 people staying here at the moment, maybe it'll liven up later. Not feeling too jetlagged at the moment, just a bit weird. The view flying into the airport was awesome, all the coastal areas of North Island seem very spars...
Auckland, New Zealand noodle1505After a very smooth flight which went by quickly, we arrived in Auckland at 3AM ... instead of 4AM.. thanks to the wind that pushed us. For once, why can't we arrive later! :) Ah well! We got there fine, gone through immigration and customs fine and sat down and had breakfast in the airport until about 5am until we got up and thought it was late enough to get a shuttle bus to our hostel. We got to the Kiwi backpackers on upper Queen Street (main shopping street in Auckland, really nice street...

... Australian wines were cheaper than New Zealand wines - even though the local wines were produced just up road. Car hire was also inexpensive, if you avoided the big companies like Hertz, Avis & Budget who have a nasty habit of loading lots of extras on, like insurance & mileage charges. Barbara's sister, Margaret & her husband Michael had flown out to join us for the New Zealand leg of our trip. We were going to spend the first 2 days ...
Auckland, New Zealand chris-barbara... squid - yuck! The crossing between the North and South Islands I will remember for as long as I live! We were fortunate to have a beautiful day after the rain and we stood on deck the Interislander as we passed through the Cook Strait and the sun rippled on the sea. We had left our cameras in the car below deck! We landed in Picton and drove to Nelson for one night - a lovely town with an odd looking ...
Auckland, New Zealand tuppence... town. Within the domain was the War Memorial Museum. Wouldn't call it a War Memorial as such other than the original purpose of the building. It was much more of a museum, very similar, though not as big, to the Te Papa in Wellington. Jen went through I sat and read! From here went back to the hostel and went to the Globe bar downstairs where they were having a Free Pizza night. Dominoes - not the best but good for a change. A lot of walking in the heat and my feet are a ...
