Into Africa

... family who's education, as a girl, my grandparents had sponsored.

Once we'd got our bearings and I'd adjusted myself to my new African surroundings, we set off for our trek up Africa's second highest mountain.
We were joined by another British family and had a fantastic team made up of a set of staggeringly strong porters who made us feel pretty pathetic as we puffed up the slopes and they jogged by laden down with food, tents, their stuff, most of our ...

I'm not in Nairobi, I just can't change it..!

... that and the kids malnutrition clinic was pretty horrified overall. However, then went to a place called moyamba which is a jungle town blown to smithereens in the war and now very robinson-crusoe wit hthe jungle taking over, did live radio (cue lauging at our voices) and then headed off to super-rural villages for direct outreach and examination of potential patients in the field. with i could have taken more photos but the villagers ...

... then spit out. I felt like a kid in a candy store eating as much as I possibly could. It was so sweet but I thought I was going to break my tooth off! After saying goodbyes we got in the car and opened the "Tip Top" (secret) letter Lilian wrote to Michelle. According to the letter and to Mr. Mugo, her dad, Mr. Mugo's brother, is constantly in jail and beats his children. Her father constantly argues with her mother, keeping her awake and constantly afraid, and refuses ...

Nawwww, I don't want the MUZUNGU price!

... all fun, rewarding, and exciting so I’m pumped about getting it all started!

On a lighter note, we went to the Maasai market today and I met a lot of interesting people.  You have to do some serious bargaining to get stuff at a fair price (and by fair I mean fair for Kenyan standards aka a shawl for more than 300 Kenyan Shillings or about $4 would be unfair!).  So anyway, I had a lot of conversations and arguments but Kenyans are hilarious and it was so ...

After leaving the airport, we get to Nairobi Youth Hostel, where the man who organized our trip meets and welcomes us, before departing to Maasai Mara National reserve. It's going to be a long and tough journey, only 300 km, but a lot of bad roads, bumps and animals, along the Rift Valley. We stop for lunch at Narok, our first meal in Kenya. Not bad really. A short walk and get some local money to buy things and pay drinks. Dollar bills before 2000 are ...

Lamu Lamu Lamu!

... He texts again, hey I'm at the bar inside, where are you? Riiigghhht.... We are at the bar outside, of course! So he comes outside....introduces himself... and for a brief moment we glimpse a beautiful friendship that could be. But our stupid dog f**cking hostel is awaiting our arrival for dinner. So we decide we have to leave after barly saying hello... but we will be back, and we will drink and be merry! So back to our guest house, dinner is ok... well actually my chicken is ...

Rachael's December 2008 - Part 2!

... VSOs we joined are mostly working around Mombasa. A day later two others joined us to complete our party of 10. We were more girls than boys, but this didn’t cause a problem. We were all different ages and the majority from the UK, but we all had differing amounts of experience of working/travelling abroad so it was nice to share experiences. Most of them had arrived in Kenya mid October, so we were all relative newbies to VSO Kenya. We all got on remarkably ...

... have a lovely view out to sea from where we are staying. We also get cooked amazing seafood every night by the guys who run the house - lobster, calamari, prawn, crab etc - to eat on the terrace. Christmas eve was a lively affair. Despite our islamic surroundings we tracked down a place to buy booze - the policemen's canteen of course, with an excellent selection of wines and spirits! With our American pals Joe and ...
