... the hillside which was pretty much a rainforest. Climbing up the hillside on a pathway made out of mud is not easy let me tell you. This being made even harder by the fact on this side of the hill there were no trees to grab hold of. The only thing to stop you falling back down were the tuffs of grass which hadn't quite worn away from people walking there. That's all well and good but 1, tuffs of grass do not hold your body weight, yes you can grab on to them but you just end up ...

Finally I arrived at the the bay of islands, which I was really looking forward to! After a surprisingly interesting ( to be honest...) guided tour in the Maori Museum I made a classic tourist tour with a boat. ... I just snorkelled the whole time and used the empty deck of the boat as a dive platform (and no!!! I didn't capsize it doing this) The peace and quite was very soothing and all to soon the boat was full of fed and watered tourists all heading back to harbour. Mike (ably assisted by the dainty Michelle) gave it the beans on the return leg, getting a fare 13 notts going and getting the rig into race format, with the keel being hoyed over to ...

... jumped back down, which was fun too!

Next we visited a beach on the north-western side called Spirit Bay, where we had a lovely swim. The beach had a slightly peach-coloured hue thanks to the millions of tiny, pulverised seashells amongst the sand.

Half-way back towards Ahipara, we stopped at Rarawa Beach on the eastern side. The sand was so incredibly white, we just had to jump in for another swim! We were a little disappointed to see that 4WDs were permitted ...
