... Back to the room for a siesta and relax, dinner in the room again tonight. 13.11.14 Sicily to the mainland. Tomorrow we head off Sicily onto the mainland and make our way North towards France. Sicily, what did I think. Taormina and Cefalu were excellent. Siracusa, not so nice. Seems a bit poorer than the mainland, besides staring at strangers the people were generally nice and we did get shouted drinks by strangers, sounds a bit like Australia, yes probably. The next post is probably a week ...

Interesting morning driving through Acireale to find a vet as Tia has a very weepy eye. Firstly the narrow road where Italian drivers do not want to let you through so we got a little stuck and Giles did an amazing manoeuvre and somehow we did not scrape the van. We parked a short way from the vet and I took Tia in and was seen and out within ...

... Taormina is today a touristy, glitzy hill town...stylish but unreal...and I read very unSicilian. Well I get that with all the label stores on the stroll. I am thinking rather than the first town we visit in Sicily it should be the last! Literally I think everything from an elevation point of view will be down hill from here? I also read that local gossip has it that the town is uncontaminated by corruption because even the Mafia likes ...

... for your next visit to the "boot" of Italy.

The breakfast was great and even featured some fruit along with the usual pastries, yogurt, bread, cheeses and salamis. This morning the bread was hot out of the oven. If you are into cappuccinos they are offered at every breakfast. I'm a black coffee person so have had to find ways around this...as in adding just a bit of hot milk to the coffee. Today the coffee ...

... substantial history here too, with the Saracens and Normans using it as a fortress, then in the 16th century it being an important centre in the Spanish/ French wars. Sitting on our deck late on Sunday evening, finishing the bottle of red wine and looking out across the water, it's a fine way to end our 4 days in Taormina. Tomorrow morning we have a bus trip to Messina (an hour), and then a 2 hour hydrofoil journey to Lipari in the Aeolian Islands. This will be our base for 6 ...
