Beaches and boozing.

On our second day in KK we decided to head out to the islands and do a little snorkeling andjust laze about on the beach for some R & R.
Of course, looking at a map would have been too easy, and we headed towards the water, where we thought we had seen a jetty. Obviously, we went the wrong way and nearly got sucked in by a guy in jeans, a denim shirt and a fantastic mullet! Sarah thought that the price he was quoting seemed a bit pricier than what she had remembered reading, so we head...

Mount Kinabalu

Sunday Sep 12th - Day 130 To our immense relief, we wake up to clear blue skies. It's a nice day for a climb and having left our rucksacks at Rose Cabin, arrive at Park headquarters at 7am. The Malays love a bit of paperwork and with entrance fees, permits, insurance and guides to pay for, there's no shortage of it here. A guide is compulsory (70R) but can be shared by up to 6 people, so we decide to wait for 4 more. Eventually at 8.15am we set off, 6 of us and our guide Guinea. I say guide b...

Tues Sep 14th - Day 132 The overnight arrival of several gallons of lactic acid to our limbs lead to a day of restricted movement. We swapped the Daya Hotel for the cheaper Pantai Inn, and explored a little of downtown KK in a kind of constipated shuffle. We ate plenty and lay down often. Expenses (RM7/pound): Accom 64, laundry 16, internet 21, Oz LP 139, phone 3, post 61.90, lunch 10, dinner 41.30 Wed Sep 15th - Day 133 Rene started feeling unwell at about midnight, and lets just say the bat...

The hardest mountain ever

Today is Monday but I need to go back to Saturday...Saturday is when we started climbing the mountain. Rachel and I climbed together, and we did pretty good. It was so hard though. Kelly was not kidding when he said it was practically vertical the whole time. The vast majority with the exception of like 100 yards total was like climbing stairs. A lot of the time the stairs were like 1-1/2 feet tall. The fist part of the trail to Laban Rata was 6 km and there was a rest stop with benches and r...

Gotta love the greenback :)

Greetings from Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia! I know I haven't gotten around to finishing the Outback entry, but I don't have a ton of time at the moment and I wanted to get in a quick update on the Malaysian marathon adventure. The first leg of the trip was a 5-ish hour flight from Perth to Brunei on Royal Brunei Airlines. The flight began with a traditional Islamic travel blessing, which is, I'm sure, the first time that I've ever received an Islamic blessing. Images of mosques from around the wo...

Sabah

After conducted the audit at Sabah Plant, I continued my second trip to Mt. Kinabalu trekking, P.3 and additional Manukan island and Sapi island. Pine Resort provided a green environment surrounding with pines, fresh air, cold weather and the Mt. Kinabalu was hidden behind the cloud. A good rest made a group of us have a good day for trekking from mesilau to laban rata. Stepped on the foot of Mt. Kinabalu, crossing the streams, wet stones, bridges, passed by waterfalls, trees... It's all from...

... a couple of sunsets on the waterfront. We have to rethink our reckless eating habits and visit an Italian which seems a bit safer, although sat as we are, in the middle of Malaysia it does seem a bit odd. Ruth and James take a trip to a local island and do some snorkelling. Unfortunately Ruth forgets to take insect repellent and comes back covered in bites, at least 24 on her back ...

Twice as Nice: Malaysia Travels

... back to the boat for our next island journey. Actually we never made it on shore, but we did feed some sea eagles from the boat close to the coastline. That was entertaining. The island after that was very strange. The guide asked if we wanted to go to a popular spot or a secluded spot. In unison, we selected the empty locale, which turned out to be empty for a reason. With coral close to shore and no snorkel gear, we couldn't swim and most of the island was rocky ...

Aches and Pains

... our very stiff legs. Ross appeared to be suffering the effects of the alcohol, however still in bed at 3pm with a fever and headache. Mandy organised a doctor who came and jabbed Ross in the buttock. Sinusitus was the diagnosis and he is now resting and on the road to recovery, with many medicines to take. One day left in Kota Kinabalu, trying to decide if we raft tomorrow or not? Hope all is well! And a Happy New Year to you all!

... fishing villages and I took a batik painting 2day course.. we were lucky enough to meet alot of really great people, both travellers and locals.. it was just such a chilled out place.. no roads-which means no cars or motorbikes.. no power between 10am and 6pm.. and only one awesome little beach reggae bar with small tables spread out along the sand.. and the beverage selection was chilled-out as well... 2 types of beer, or a small bottle of ...
