it's like going from Idaho to California...

you don't even have to change time zones to travel to Korea. The two and a half hour flight leaves and arrives in a special "international" part of Japan's and S. Korea's domestic airports. so one backpack. one day bag. two guide books. half a plan. and I land in Seoul, captial and largest city in South Korea. I'd booked one night in "Kim's Guesthouse" and arranged to meet my long lost friend Mark in the nearby Hongik University neighborhood. the hostel was great with lots of English and Japa...

Back to the Mother Land

Liked - shopping! And the food Disliked - that no one seems to leave, so for my own selfish reasons I could not get any travel advice Do Differently - not sure Transportation - its really easy to get around with the subway. Stayed - Golden Pond Guesthouse, it was great, small, but nice people and a wonderful location. Kims Guesthouse for one night, it was nice more room, much further out, and more of a expat teacher vibe. Well this is long over due. It was easy to get from the airport, I ende...

So much for "adjusting"

... a bit. We toured another small "palace" up the road - Unhyeongung - and stopped by Tapgol Park, which features a pagoda from a Buddhist temple formerly located on the site, and was the location of a demonstration declaring independence from the Japanese occupation in 1919. Apparently it is, in general, a popular site for political demonstrations.

We made our way back up to Changdeokgung. It turns out that they offer tours in Korean ...

mmmm good food, rice wine, spa

... be a 3+ hour experience if you arent careful. so long as you keep down the RWC (rice wine count) you will feel good and refreshed since the food isnt too filling. but a hi RWC ensures the next day you spend a lot of time in bed, and in the mens room and the spa.

we would totally recommend Seoul to other travelers en route to another destination, great big city with all you need to make you comfortable and happy.

the word of the day is "placenta"

... the story. the one class i sat in on was for 3rd graders, in which they were shown a clip about a puppy that was born with green fur. apparently, sometimes amniotic fluid mixes with the placenta, resulting in naturally green fur. "now kids, repeat after me...am-ni-o-tic...pla-cen-ta. now who can make a sentence using the word placenta? what about amniotic?" i sure as hell can't. can you? whack!

Mozart at the crossing - Korea

... our bags and leaving to the airport, we had a look around at the duty free shops. We bought some bookmarks and pens as souveniers. We also took part in these stall type of things promoting Korean heritae and culture. There were free events and activities you could participate in, and I did a ink printing type thing. Very nice!

We boarded the plane and duly settled down to a long 11 hour flight. We had video screens this time ...

Ramblings of Korea...

... cursing in foreign tongue. I must admit, it is very easy for me to get a bit of a potty mouth with the Hispanics in the kitchen when I am working in restaurants. But it doesn’t really feel like cursing b/c it’s not my native tongue. *K. This goes for all languages, evidently. And so, as to not offend anybody, www.engrish.com made a spin off website that solely deals with the profanity: adult.engrish.com There are T*NS of shirts and ...

Brothers reunited...

... to my apartment went out of the window when a friendly local woman took a shine to us, and we chatted to her most of the way. She was a very likeable ajumma, so it created a good first impression of Korea. In fact, the local middle-aged women seemed to take a shine to Nigel especially, and I was in danger of losing my 'ajumma magnet' mantle! Even though Andrew and Nigel were both shattered, I didn't let them sleep as it was such a glorious day, whereas the forecast for ...

February 28, 2009 Conversations of Fish "Hey Smith, what do you think of New Guy?" "Man he's annoying. He swims around like he owns the place." "Yeah I know. Did you know that he bit my tail the other day?" "Holy **** the nerve!" "Yeah tell me about it." "What does Old Grey Eyes think of him?" "He's not impressed either. You know how he is though. Not saying much. Just chilling in his corner." "Yeah that's old grey eyes." "To bad ...

Greetings from Korea!

... and dryers in the basement for residents to use. My "stove" is literally a hotplate with two sections for cooking/heating. Ha! It works well though....today I made tea, coffee, and soup, so all is well with the hotplate. Good thing I packed sheets.....my bed had three blankets on it, but no sheets. My pillow is tiny. It reminds me of a large throw pillow. It will work for now, but I may need to upgrade down the road. Oh, guess what?....I have heated floors ...
