City of Peace

Hiroshima, one of the most well know cities in the world. All for the wrong reasons... Since then the city has managed to bounce back with a vengeance. The rebuilt city has been designed on a block system which is easy to navigate, this is interwoven with rivers that cut across the city and seem to give it a calming influence. Hiroshima is fairly small so you can walk around easily or you can take the tram which also goes to the 2 local ports. No visit to Hiroshima should be without a trip to...

HISTORY IS MADE:

8:15 am, August 6, 1945, Hiroshima, Japan... The awesome destructive force of the "ATOM BOMB" was without warning unleashed by one group of humans on another for the first time... Tens of thousands of men, women, and children perished instantly!

"The Dome" is (perhaps) the sole remaining structure preserved from that event. It stands as a testament to history, and ...

... apart from the prehistoric bugs everywhere! We met a colony of pregnant cats and their Tom on the walk back ... I hate to admit I had a cuddle, I dont care if they have rabies, I already have flu and some kind of gut disintergrating bacteria anyway - so what is a cat kiss going to do ? Give me the sh!ts .... ah-HA - got you there ... i already got em! hahahahaha.

Hiroshima... Second Chance

... out of little ceramic cups. After dinner we headed back to the museum to meet up with our group at the buses. We traveled back to the train station and took another bullet train back to Hiroshima. I didn't sleep on the way back but rather listened to music and looked at the cities that we passed along the way. When we arrived back at the ship I changed clothes and got ready to go out. It was a little after ten so I changed fast and then met up with ...

... days to visit museums. Remember the Japanese fastfood restaurant in Tokyo with the vending machine? I found a branch of that near the Park. Had a rice bowl with beef and vegetables, miso soup and green tea for $6. Thank God, I`m saved from the evils of McDonald`s... Visited the World Peace Memorial Cathedral. Finally... A Christian establishment in Japan... The building was intensely modern. Its bare concrete walls resembled a ruined, post-a-bomb Hiroshima building. The inside of this ...

... experience when you can't help but picture it after that fateful day in 1945. However, it's inspiring how prosperous the place is and how determined the city is to remember those who suffered from the bombing but still keep on moving forward.

But, onto brighter things! Today we went to Miyajima Island. Our most favorite, favorite place so far. It is home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine and as soon as you get onto the ferry, you are captivated by its magic. The ...

... so I shall post this photo of Kinkakuji (The Temple of the Golden Pavilion), alone: And here is some video of the mighty Heian Shrine. I think I may have appreciated Kyoto even more the second time around. I don't think Japan necessarily enjoys, or indeed promotes, the best image internationally when it comes to tourism, but Kyoto really is something special. A large portion of its land area ...

... on a street. A lot of domestic and international tourists were strolling around the island. I was asked to take a photo of a couple from overseas in broken Japanese. However because I talked to them in English, they looked surprised to meet a English-speaking Japanese. Daishoin temple is another attraction in the island. You can find a lot of interesting statues like Anpanman, a Japanese anime hero, and spinning wheels of sutra.

... We walk back to the station and have a quick "lunch" of water, pretzels and potato chips, all of which we had from the supermarket in Kyoto. Next is the 1 hour ride to Hiroshima where we'll spend the night. The trip to Hiroshima is no problem and we find our hotel about 20 minutes walk from the station. After checking in and dropping our bags, we set out to walk to Peace Memorial Park, built as a memorial to the victims of the atomic bomb and to the city in ...
