... shaped rock/hill with wine cellars carved out of them. Each cellar has a little bar area where people can come in and taste the wine. This would be an unbelievable place for a pub crawl for anyone interested. All the cellars are centred around a park the size of half a football field and there must be around 40 different ones there (plus a few restaurants). Everything is sold by the dl (decilitre = 100ml). A 1 dl ...
Eger, Hungary bigkevoz...
Eger is around 130kms from Budapest and an easy ride, mostly via a good new highway (I think it is the M3) and then a short, but very scenic ride into the hills. The city centre is very small and with the help of my friend Kate, it was easy to find a good (free) parking spot. The castle up the hill is small, but nice to visit for about 30 minutes. We just missed a big ...
Eger, Hungary jphil8871... Tatras as we headed south, first passing the mountain resort of Stary Smolovec and Tantranska Lomnica with its cable car heading up into the clouds (maybe next time). Then through the town of Poprad with row after row of concrete apartment blocks... and huge new Tesco Hypermarket.
We continued south through the lovely Slovakian countryside and forest, with some excellent twisty roads up and over several ranges ...
... st na bicykli nedá. A to to mesto vidíme - 1.5km. Dusko s Broňou kupujô nejaké drobnosti na čerpacej stanici. Rozhodli sme sa ísť po poli. Tlačiť a tlačiť. Skoro nás zahlusia vlastné bicykle, keď me ich plnonalozené prekladáme cez zvodidlá. Tlačíme bicykle po ...
Miskolc, Hungary thailon... we had to find a place to buy toiletries... not an easy task! However, we managed to find almost everything we needed and hunkered down for the night. In the morning, we drove to Miskolc, where there is another cave system. The difference is that these caves have a natural hot spring, so there is a huge thermal bath complex. It was nice, but being that it was a national holiday, it was PACKED with tourists. We got nice and pruney in ...
Aggtelek, Hungary dancer_alison... class train...without reservations (translates as we stood without a seat 90% of the trip...on a slow train that took almost 3 hours) We had a great time though. We are greatful God gave us this opportunity to return to Hungary and we are loving the adventure. God is good..all the time.
Miskolc, Hungary smbapc... before going on a tour of Eger Castle. We paid for a guided tour of the castle and were told it would be in English. They were wrong as we discovered when we entered the first room on the tour and listened to the guide speak in Hungarian patiently waiting for the English version that never came. We asked if the tour was going to be entirely in Hungarian and we were told it was. Luckily there was a school ...
Eger, Hungary tyga... solely of wine cellars, most of whom are more than willing to let you sample their wares. An enjoyable half hour or so there and I was ready to actually buy some wine! For anyone who may be heading that way, make a purchase at the cellars at the top of the valley, not the bottom - the wine is about a third the price, and seemed just as good (after the extensive half hour of research). I picked up a litre of quality merlot for about 60p! I slept on the way home :)
