Day 13 - Back in Thailand, Phangnga

... The rooms were nice and clean, there was a swimming pool, the restaurant offered great and cheap food, and the view...., the view was just breath-taking. And to my surprise, it was quite empty, with just a few families. I understood later that most of the people take 1 day tours from Phuket, which is a pity. All these package tours are such a rush, you don't get to enjoy what you see, and you always pay more. We checked in ...

Ao Nang

... to assume it's a real relationship and not purely a financial deal). Anyway, Krabi was lovely, but now we're in Ao Nang. We tried to get to J Mansion, which is supposedly a superb guest house, but it was booked (and it's low season!). So we did what worked for us last time--crossed the street and found something else. We're staying at Jinda Guest House right now, which is decent. It's slightly more money than the last place, but it also ...

... scooters (Nhuy)still didn't want one for herself, and headed for Klong Muang beach and surrounding areas. We arrived at Klong Muang by about 1:30pm and a rather heavy thunderstorm had started to roll-in from the N/W so we headed for shelter and a bite to eat at the only real place open outside of town, The Irish Pub of all places :-)on the esplanade. Another word of warning... The worst food any of us have had while on our entire ...

Nearing the end....

... Shop for lunch without notifying children or parents that we have returned! It's so nice to have some alone time! As per my eating plan, we order and share the Thai Set Menu which includes sweet and sour fish, massaman curry and a sago, yam and coconut-cream dessert which is exactly the same as Malaysian Bor-Bor Cha-Cha. It's all delicious. And so sad that we've only 2 more Set Menus before we go home! Walking back ...

Tour de Trance

... etc. I sat through a couple of episodes of the Simpsons before making my way to Drop-in Bar, home of the Full Moon parties, for 'Ladies Night'. This sounded promising but by ten pm there were no ladies whatsoever, in fact it was just me sat at a table on the beach whilst a Greek guy danced eccentrically on his own to trance in the bar (although the soundtrack in his head was totally different to the one that I could hear). I was ...

Getting to Khao Sok

... to Bangkok a few weeks ago. It earned the title VIP. The seats reclined and a foot rest came up. I slept most of the way but whenever I was awake I was taken aback by the beauty of the southern countryside. There were so many palm trees it reminded me of driving through Florida. The bus stopped for lunch someone along the way and that was part of my bus fare. I had no idea what the items on the table were but I was seated at a table for 5 thais and I was ...

Frogs in the pool

After a bright, sunny and rather too early start, we caught our flight to Phuket. It was a beautiful flight as we passed over turquoise seas, verdant islands, swathes of white sand and undulating kaarst hills. After the usual haggling over taxi prices, we were taken from the airport to the bus stop. It wasn't long before the bus arrived, carrying us north ...

Out of the trees and into the breeze

Once again the Tockay wakes us. We are still in the jungle. We make our way to breakfast and there share the unfortunate company of the three young blond boys shepherded by a weary upper-class accented South African couple. We will call them "deddy" boys as their crocodile tear-wailing is broken only by shouts of "deddy, he hurt my shoulder" or "deddy, I have the ba-amboo" or "deddy, deddy, deddy." When we learn our possible day trip could involve them we quickly ...

Going Home

... night with Tom and Salli--a perfect way to bookend my trip. I'm going to miss this place so much, that it's hard to believe I chose to come home a fe days earlier than planned. But when I start thinking I made a mistake, I remember how much I really do miss everyone at home...and how excited I am for mexican food. Whiskey buckets and pad thai are great, but I'm ready for some margartias and chips and salsa. Well, maybe one more bucket before I go....
