Aswan

So after being on a sleeper train for about 12 hours we arrived in Aswan. All i can say about this place on arrival is man it's hot!!! Bearing in mind that in Egypt they are heading towards the winter and it was still really, really hot. Took the morning to wander around the town as well as walk along the Nile. It was quite interesting aside from the few marriage proposals and men staring at you like they have never seen a westerner woman before. Also there were markets here so walked through...

Aswan, Elephantine Island, Sahara and camels

We were woken up on the train by the conductor announcing that brekky would be served shortly, eggs (staple breakfast food), rolls and a piece of cake. Looking out the window we could see the farmers working in the fields - the people here are much darker in colour that the Egyptians in Cairo.. We hopped off the train in Aswan and were met by our bus driver who took us to the Keylany Hotel. We saw many feluccas sailing on the Nile along the way. Checking in, i headed upstairs for a shower (v ...

Happy New Year...Would you like to see my Shop!!!

Another convoy and a complete waste of time...this time they didn't even both with the second part of the journey or the check points, waste of time, money and as soon as i'm back the first thing i'm doing is emailing all guide books, tourist board in Egypt and the bus company that left us stranded in Hungarda...rubbish Egypt! So two temples of the way down South to Aswan. Edfu and Kom Ombo. Edfu was a complete tourist trap, so had a quick wonder around. The site is pretty huge and famous for...

We left Cairo on Sun 26th Nov and got the night train to Aswan in the south of Egypt. Train left at 10:30pm and arrived at 1:00pm on Monday. Cost about 20 euro each but its a nightmare trying to sleep. Got to Aswan and found a hotel called The Kilhany sounded bit Irish but it was nice and staff were really great. In Aswan we discovered "The Fallucca". This is a 1 sail boat that take people onto the Nile for about 70c per person per hour. We were told to take one at sunset and really appreciat...

Swimming, sandboarding and donkeys

Early start (again!) for a fairly tough 500km by 4WD to Siwa.

We met at the appointed time to form a convoy with 4 other vehicles to Siwa - because of the proximity to the Lybian border travel is by convouy with a military representitive, not for our protection, but to make sure we don't do anything naughty, like sneaking into Lybia. Of course, in true Egyptian style we waited around for 30min while they tried to find the army guy who was coming with us - about 23 phone calls later we ...

Day 3: Aswan-'Hello Australia, you're friend here'

Like good little tourists we make the tourist info office our first port of call. We finally managed to organise our felucca trip with Captain Nemo but not before the 'friendly' (read: annoying) staff member ****** me off with his carryings on and I have to storm out in a huff. We make it to our hotel, 'Keylany Hotel' which is up a dusty road in a rather interesting street. Presumably keen to make their dirty, derelict street somewhat more festive there are strings of bits of colourful paper ...

Although we traveled on the overnight wagon lit in an excellent private compartment with dinner and breakfast included, it was an anything but restful trip. The motion and clickety-clack of the train made sleep fitful at best. We did not arrive in Aswan at our best but arrived and gratefully were not hassled in any way upon leaving the train station. A short taxi journey and we were at our hotel, the Keylany, considered by several guide books as the best budget option in town. I knew this hot...

Day 3 - Aswan

As previously stated we arrived in the mid morning off the sleeper train to the Keylany hotel which has internet facilities on site which has allowed us to post photos and update blog and send emails to some people. After settling in fo ra few hours we set off on a boat trip around Elephantine island home of the nubians and their oblisks, and were joined by Handi a 70-odd year old nubian who filled us in on their history and culture. He was a 12th generation nubian. Nubians lived between Egyp...

After a 15 hour train ride, we arrived in Aswan to the taxi drivers insisting our hotel was many kilometres away. I really believe they don't know what a kilometre is, but have figured out that if they say a high enough number that people tourists will take the taxi. After settling in our tiny hotel room (but it had air conditioning) we decided to take a long walk around town and find dinner. Jesse found a restaurant in the guide book called the Nubian House Restaurant that claimed to have th...

Day 4: Felucca Aswan- Luxor

... the next day for a trip to Kom Ombo or Edfu temples and after a sly consultation with the lonely planet book I discover it's possible to get to Luxor on a bus or cab from there as long as you're accompanied by police as part of a tourist convoy. I thought I'd wait until the girls were broken a little more before I informed them of my latest scheme and finally drifted off to sleep with smug thoughts of entertainment and junk food soon to be min
