Historical Traveler Reviews Kette Hotel Zürich
OK - could try harder
We stayed 2 nights in July. Arriving by car, it was quite difficult to find the hotel - not helped by bad-tempered local drivers with a "you ignorant foreigner - why don't you know which lane to drive in?" mentality. Even worse than London!
When we finally found it, the Hotel - an unattractive building on a mostly commercial street, 15 minutes walk from the City centre - was fine inside, as were the reception staff. Underground car parking was spacious and secure. Our room was small and only reasonably well-equipped. Could do with a refit. Breakfast was as ample as any similar hotels in Central Europe. However, getting the attention of staff, to serve coffee etc, was a struggle.
Zurich is an odd mix of the seedy - East of River - and absurdly pricey - West of River. The old heart of the City around Lindenhof is great. But we never felt particularly welcome, despite having lots to spend. As a result, we didn't. Do they really want tourists?
Got an upgrade
We had booked our standard room online with a rate of 235SF including breakfast and were very surprised when we were upgraded to a suite! We had a big bedroom and a big living room with a couch and a chair and a desk area, two TV's and a beautiful bathroom -- well actually two bathrooms, since the toilet was separate from the sink, tub and shower (around the corner even which was rather odd). The front desk staff was very helpful with directions and tram tickets. The breakfast was excellent, with eggs made to order included. The bed was great and we slept better than our previous five nights in Paris. The location is a bit away from everything, but it was quiet. The tram stop is almost directly in front of the hotel and you could easily walk from the train station as well.
Sehr gutes Hotel - Empfehlenswert!
Very good hotel - recommended!
Stayed here for 3 days in early July. Booked an upgraded deluxe room. Staff was extremly friendly and helpful. Room was well kept and size was generous. The bed was very comfortable. It may be because I booked a deluxe vs. standard room. Breakfast was included in my room rate with a cold buffet with excellent selections. Hot items, e.g., eggs, baked beans etc. may be ordered at no extra charge. Excellent amenity supplies in room. The only draw back about this hotel is its location which is slightly off. There is a tram stop nearby about 3 minutes walk from front entrance. Otherwise, the main railway station is about 15 minutes walk at leisurely pace or 20~25 minutes to the old town. Not being so close is also an advantage too, depending on what you want, without all the noises and traffic.
Nice subtle friendly hotel
Its a nice hotel, conveniently located 5 minutes walk from the main shopping district.
Tips:
The hotel does not have a airport shuttle. So instead of taking the cab from the airport, go for the 'big ben' bus which charges 10francs/person.
Avoid the sofitel chinese restaurant: expensive. Found a fly in my meal, terrible response from the host interms of customer service.
Greek cafe opposite the hotel and some restaurants down the street are a better bet.
Railway station 5 minutes walk to from the hotel, great for quick day trip to geneva( where i spent 2 nights, but did not think was worth it)
Standard city centre business style hotel
I stayed Saturday night 7 May 2005. The hotel is a square block about 10 minutes walk from main railway station, itself just 10 minutes by S-bahn (local train) from the Airport. The hotel is in a main street, with trams running outside. It is built round a small internal courtyard. My room 427 was looking out on side street. Room was well furnished, with a compact bathroom. Bedroom was relatively small too but adequate. Beds had quilts. Lighting was good. Airconditioning functioned fine and the noise insulation was effective. Breakfast on 1st floor could be either full buffet CHF 32 or a light one for CHF 20 which was very good. On same floor was dining room and a bar. There is no pool in the hotel and business centre consisted of one laptop PC facing ground floor reception which I discovered only on check out. I paid CHF 170 for the room. A good functional hotel where I would stay again
Nice Hotel
I recently stayed at the Sofitel and was pleasently suprised. The location is great because you can walk to the major tourist attractions. The rooms were very nice and the beds comfortable. The hotel staff was courteous and able to answer our questions. In the morning the buffet breakfast was delicious but quite expensive. Overall I was very pleased and would definately return again.
Great Character
I really enjoyed this hotel. I stayed here in early November 2004. It was only a 5 minute walk from the Zurich HB. Definitely very covenient to the Hofbahnstrasse and the Zurich Old Town. You could walk to Zurich west if you really wanted to althought that would have been about a 20 minute walk down the river.
I completely enjoyed the rooms as it was the right size for a couple. The bathrooms colors were cherful (wood with off-white tiling) were very modern. The room had a queen bed with TV, desk, big closet, and safe. It was quite modern and there were no signs of age. While we didn't need A/C, it did have it. The elevator, lobby, and hallways were pristine. The reception and room service people were quite accomodating. I would defiinitely stay here again.
Gutes Hotel
Good place to stay when visiting downtown Zurich
Stayed here for two nights Oct 2004. Rooms are small in typical European fashion, but all was immaculate, in typical Swiss fashion. We had an issue with our first room in that the plumbing was not working. We were quickly switched to a new room and the porter came to carry all our luggage to the new room. My one complaint was that the king size bed mattress was very weak and we both had backaches in the morning. Was only here for two night so I did not request a new room, but I'm sure if I had it would have been quickly accommodated. Common areas are very nice and access to the train and downtown sites is fabulous. Was able to walk everywhere. I would definitely stay here again.

Driving to Zurich
After visiting Linderhof Castle we started the drive to Zurich. We have had somewhat of a difficult time navigating out of cities to go the correct direction we want to go. We were planning on driving through Germany to get to Switzerland but got on the highway going the wrong way and when we figured it out we were in Austria so we just decided to …

Our Swiss air flight had us arriving at Zurich airport on time as promised and as expected.
It is no coincidence that Swiss watches and punctuality go hand in hand. Tony
exchanged our remaining Euro into Swiss franc and we set to hail cab into the
city of Zurich. Our ride was both pleasant and …
