Today began with my routine trip to the local Chinese donut maker, or at least the local guy who deep fries fresh dough in hot oil and serves it up for breakfast. I had been getting breakfast from him for 4 days and decided to bring the family for my final visit. For 6 Yuan ($1) we had 2 donuts, a hard-boiled egg, a bowl of conchi, and hot soymilk with sugar. We needn't have worried. The palace and grounds mire than made up for the mockery at the gates. The views from the hill overlooking the lake were spectacular. Incredible.
To top off the day there was a quick trip to the Birds Nest. Another iconic Beijing building that is remarkable.
We ended the day by queuing once more, this time for opera tickets and a train ticket to Chengde.
