Kaleidoscopic Kusadasi

... We walked up to 2 kilometres in the complex and passed several temples, the treasury and a couple of amphitheatres.

Finally we ran the gauntlet of the souvenir shops at the exit to get to the bus which took us back to Kusadasi which has a population of 60,000 which swells to one million in summer. Remind us never to venture here then! There we were tempted to go to see a demonstration of silk winding and carpet weaving at a carpet shop. It's hard to cedit that a silk worm ...

... as impressive as Istanbul's minus the agressive shopkeepers. The carpets are a work of art..there were lots of fake knock off shops too...watches, pocketbooks. Some people were going crazy buying that stuff!! Now we are exhausted and our new friends, Kathleen and her husband have just called to say we have an early go tomorrow in Athens. This should be another long day. We're loving every minute of it!!!

... of the earthquake, many buildings fell and dirt buried a lot of the city, which, actually helped to preserve it. In order to reveal the main walkway, archaeologists had to dig down 10 metres. The library that has been built as they think it looked is built with about 50% of the original materials. It is believed that when the earthquake happened, those that survived moved to another area nearby and when they needed materials, they simply ...

A Day at the Beach

... why its so talked up. Its also hard to imagine that less than a month ago it was wall to wall bodies and sun umbrellas!! We did the obligatory wander and paddle, but decided to leave our swim for later. We checked out the flotsam and jetsam bought in by the waves and tides and found only stacks of the local seaweed - looks a lot like shredded paper - but no driftwood, no shells, a bit of rubbish, but that's it really. Guess its no surprise - there is ...

... portion was. Among much else there was a bathhouse, toilets, the famous Celsus library with its impressive front, and the large outdoor theater that could seat 25,000 people in its day. It was hard to imagine that the apostles Paul and John at one time walked the same streets we were walking (it must have looked much nicer then, though). It took around an hour to go through the site, and then there was a little show ...

... place. I was picked up at the otagar by Leonardo, the tout for the Artemis Hotel. This was on my mental list of places to look at, and, as it turns out is fine. You will recall that I stayed in another Artemis hotel a couple of weeks ago. So who was Artemis?* Well this afternoon I visited the Temple of Artemis, another of Pliny's Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A ruin now of course but a pretty big ruin at that. Incidentally this is the third of the seven that I have visited ...
