Short stop at Nairobi

Today we must leave Samburu, and we are heading for Nairobi, to spend the night. Horrible roads again, with just a short stop at a road shop for going to toilet, and we arrive in Nanyuki, the only possible stop to have lunch on the way to Nairobi (Oddis said). We are in time to walk for one hour and visit some local shops before lunch. Very poor food, but good. We miss the lodge!
After that, so many kilometers until arriving in Nairobi and checking at the hotel, which had to be changed bec...

The adventure is nearly over...

Well my African adventure has almost drawn to a close, and the Masai Mara and its experiences was a pretty good note to end on. On Saturday night we stayed on the outskirts of Nairobi and three of us girls decided to head to the Langata Giraffe Centre, especially since I have officially chosen the giraffe as my favourite animal! This place houses about 13 Rothschild giraffes (the really really big ones), who come right up to you and allow you to feed, hug, and kiss them if you so desire (sand...

Mzungu - How are you?

Jambo! That means Hello.

So we made it, arrived yesterday afternoon after a gruelling 15 hour flight with the hell of Emirates Business Class to contend with for the second half - they didn't even know how to make a vodka martini!
On the plus side, they did provide us with our own individual salt and pepper shaker and proper china and cutlery for the gourmet meals, and the welcoming glass of champagne wasn't all that bad. Boom!
We were knackered after the flight so hit the...

Jambo Kenya

Well here we are. Sitting at the internet cafe in Nairobi, near our hotel which is called Kenya comfort Hotel and it is at the junction of Muindi Mbingu/Monrovia street. It is a very nice hotel. Very clean and has just recently been refurbished and repainted. You can tell from the strong smell of the paint in the room! The flight from Cairo to Nairoi took approximately under 5 hours. It was a comfortable flight. Except at the begining as we got onto the plane, Steve and I were desperately try...

The Start of the Best Dam Trip Ever!!!

Flight to NBO

My trip over to Nairobi Kenya consisted of 3 different flights. The first from Cincinnati OH to Houston TX, then to Amsterdam, then finally to Nairobi. In all it was 24 hours of traveling including some long layovers. The flights themselves actually weren't too bad. The flight from Houston was pretty good. Each seat had their own tv with over 300 movies to choose from which is a first for me. The second flight only had 1 tv for about ...

3 days down time then 7 week safari

... explain these. Upstairs was a beautiful photographic exhibition of the tribes of Kenya from babies, women, & warriors to the old people. So proud and elegant these people are with such highly complex social systems living very subsistence type lives under the harshest conditions in a drought stricken land. Truly admirable. After the visit I took the taxi back to the city centre and found Wayne still uploading the blog (internet is so so slow in Kenya) in a cafe so I git us some ...

Masai Mara National Reserve

... the hillside and seeing a jackal feasting on a carcass. We all got amazing pictures- we were so close to the animals! The elephants and giraffes were my favorite because they are both so calm and elegant. Watching the giraffes run across the field was so peaceful. Emily has been twice before to Mara, and she said this was by far the20best safari. We got to see so much, and I loved to see the circle of life (and death) in full force in the wild.
