I have had an interesting 60th birthday!! It started in Ohrid, progressed through lunch in Skopje and ended in dinner in Sofia. As we left on the bus from Ohrid, our tour guide, Piotor, announced my birthday and handed out the words to a Polish song, "We wish you to live one hundred years". All the bus joined in !!! We drove through the Macedonian mountains towards Skopje, the capital city. We arrived there at 11. Walked to see the old city across the stone bridge into the Turkish quarter. Th...
Sofia, Bulgaria mrsmacthis morning we were taken on a city tour of Sofia. Left the hotel at 8-30 right into peak hour traffic. As we sat in the traffic jam our guide Valery told us about the background history of this place. I discovered that Bulgaria in Ancient times was Thrace. This was very interesting news. We were driven to a square where we alighted from the bus. This was just outside the Presidential Palace which had two ceremonial guards on duty. The opposite building was the Archaeological Museum which is...

Sofia, Bulgaria loobylou1986... education on the Bulgarian underground.

Judging by the better table service by the underworked staff, the fat roll of bills, and an article I'd read in The Economist some time ago about Bulgaria and Romania's questionable qualification for EU membership based on their inability to clean up corruption, I quickly drew the reasonable conclusion that these guys were Bulgarian mobsters: baldy being Tony soprano, skinny being his nephew (name?), and stumpy being ...
Sofia, Bulgaria david_chung... was one older guy about 35 who was totally smashed and loud just came in and switched the light on and myself and all the Aussies told him to switch it off as he continued to make a total racket and told us we were all a bunch of mother f****ing pu****ys what a charming fellow! a 35 year old as well very well done old boy very mature! Sofia, Bulgaria richardcowley... koht oligi kohalikele suunatud korteri stiilis toitlustusasutus.
Sofia, Bulgaria anneristo... next day. Now there's probably six Bulgarians walking around with mine and Brittany's identities. But apparently it's the law. Welcome to Eastern Europe. From the outside, our hotel looked pretty nice...3 stars. Heck, the Delta Bessborough is only a four star! It didn't take long for us to realize that there is a totally different ranking standard for hotels in Eastern Europe. Our hotel makes the HoJo look ...
Sofia, Bulgaria srb013... bare feet is much easier. anyway, we made it to a point at which we all decided there was absolutely nothing more to see, and then had to negotiate our way back down. they laughed at me when i started descending on my bum, but eventually everyone came around - we had a line of us all going down the side of the mountain on our ***** - must have looked pretty ridiculous, but it was SO steep. when we got down we were completely covered in ...
Sofia, Bulgaria tarah51... to a pretty damnable race. It was funny - stereotype or not, he was getting more Irish by the drink. Also, we didn't really pick up on it at the time, but we agree in retrospect that Bryan the American was starting to show signs that he was a little naive - We were talking about the South Park episode on Alcohol Anonomous being a religious cult, and his defence was that you didn't have to believe in God, it was just whatever higher power you look to ...
Sofia, Bulgaria foolsgoldFrom Istanbul I took a night bus to Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. Hanging out at the Turkey-Bulgaria border crossing at 2:30 in the morning was certainly an interesting experience. The whole process of leaving Turkey and entering Bulgaria took over two hours, two hours that I will likely never forget. Our bus driver was giving all the instructions in Bulgarian, so of course I couldn't understand a word of what was going on and just had to follow the rest of the bus ...
