Windland

... a country starving for economic help from tourism money would at least make an effort at occasionally smiling or being somewhat welcoming (or at least not stare at you with contempt when you dare to ask a question).
-They should call this place Windland, not Iceland. I've never seen rain blown completely sideways for hours on end. We sort of lucked out with weather, but even when it's nice, it's windy and crisply cool.

... that the airport is in, reminded me of a northern Mongolia. It is barren and rocky, and flying in, you see flat plains punctuated by hills and mountain peaks, and snowy patches or geysers off in the distance. It is very, very desolate looking. The only difference is that Iceland actually has paved roads. Driving into Reykjavik, I started to wonder who on earth settled here originally. Who paddled their little (or quite possible very big) boat around Iceland, hit shore ...

... up selecting a Super Jeep tour of the south coast. I felt bad for the poor lady who was helping us, but that feeling went away after she balked at my idea of a goodbye group hug after the whole ordeal. It was about 3:00 at this time and I was getting my second wind. So I suggested going to a bar for one drink before taking an afternoon nap. Amy wasn't up for a drink, so she went back to the hotel, but Ken and Jon ...

... stunningly beautiful girls on the streets but not so many men, unlike NY where they were an unbelievably amount of extremely attractive black men. We walked up to a famous church that is supposed to be quite stunning, unfortunately it is under construction and covered in a curtain of scaffolding.. the tower was still accessible and offered some wicked views of the city. Oh yes and did I mention the 22 hours of daylight.... We visited Icelands number one tourist attraction, the ...

... For example -"Geysir" (Geyser in English) is an Icelandic word now commonplace. As you know, a Geyser is a hot spring that shoots up hot water (Old Faithful in Yellowstone). I actually went and saw the original Geysir where the name comes from. Now Geysir has become the generic word (much like Kleenex for tissue paper) for all hot springs shooting water.Another word that we use is "saga". Saga is Icelandic -meaning, obviously, a story or tale. This country is full ...

Relaxing in Reykjavik

... the rain), but it´s nice and very enticing! So, with rain forecast all week I nipped back up to Reykjavik and yes, the forecast has been correct - it´s been chucking it down. Yesterday I met up with some Swiss friends and we visited the Reykjavik art museum and a photography display in the library. The art museum was really cool with a great exhibition by the Icelandic Love Corporation - a trio of female performing artists. The photography exhibition was ...

... the prices for a main course of fish or meat ranged from around $50-80 Australian, a glass of wine about $14-18, etc. Even just buying a coffee or tea was expensive, so we did without. Accomodation was also very expensive - we stayed in the cheapest place we could find (6 bed dorm at the Aurora Hostel) and that was nearly $60 per night each. The owner, Siggy was a big Icelandic man and quite a character. The hot water at the hostel was very unusual - it had a sulphur smell and ...

... The weather improved after the first few days and it stayed at around 11 -15 degrees C for the rest of our stay. The locals came out in daring T-shirts (we carried on wearing our coats) and some of them asked us if we'd been about for the unusual snowstorm the weekend before. I forgave the travel brochure for its weather misinformation, and Nick and I went horse riding.
Nick had not been on a horse since an unfortunate incident in Finland the year before ...
