Gracias por Dios que es Viernes

Monday will be Costa Rica's Independence Day, but the celebrations have been going on all this week. Today our class took a break at 9:30 to go watch the cultural performances in the park. Yesterday I taught the students in my study group the colloquial expression "blown away," in the sense of "very impressed." Today it came in handy. A few groups of children ranging in age from about eight to twelve performed a series of dances, songs, and theatrical scenes, and I couldn't believe how good t...

A Veces Tengo Miedo del Mar

Some of the girls decided to get up to watch the sun rise today (not me; I only woke up because they were banging around so much; then I quickly went back to sleep) but it was raining at that hour. By the time I got up it was merely overcast, and by the time Lydia got off the phone with Aventuras Bravas, it was partly sunny. Our surfing coach was a nineteen-year-old local named Gerald. After we walked to their "offices" on the main road of town and paid for our lessons, they loaded us and the...

Despues, fuimos a bucear con tubo de respiracion

We awoke early again to catch the 7:30 bus to Cahuita, where our snorkeling guide, a shirtless, sun-browned, slightly wizened older man named Joseph, met us at the bus terminal. His English was quite good; none of us had any trouble understanding him. He also struck me as a deeply happy person who loved his town and his work. I envied him. The sun beat down on us from a cloudless sky as our motorboat sputtered out into the water. Pretty soon the air reeked of gasoline, and the combination of ...

... Rentals who is dishonest and rude - charges $24 one day and $40 the next for a scooter. Of course he didn't get my business and I hope you will avoid him too. The other is Jamallie, a local craft vendor who beat me out of $30....but that was my fault for believing that he would deliver me the hammock I asked him to bring me from another town like he said he would do if I gave him the money up front. I know better but thought I would give him the chance to prove ...

... wild, both species are host to a rich plumage of algae, which helps hide them from predators, and supports a population of moths. Sloths are prey for eagles, snakes, and large cats, but most of the sloths at the sanctuary are victims of human activity. The Sloth Sanctuary was founded by Judy and Luis Arroyo, two animal lovers who took in an orphaned baby sloth in 1992. They searched for information on sloths to find out how to better care for the newly ...

... went for a bike ride to the next town along from Puerto Viejo but as Natasha´s bike broke on the way back the long bike ride turned into an even longer walk! Me, Rachael and Ellie spent the day searching for bracelets on the market that would give us the traveller vibe and after some successful bartering we are now looking like true travellers/tramps! The evening was spent listening to a good band in a bar before heading to bed ready for our exit from Puerto Viejo the following morning.

Steffi arrives - Happy 40th Birthday!

... it had a good swimming pool and the beach was just 50 metres across a dirt road. However all over the place there was a feeling that "low life" were waiting for tourists to leave their bags without guard. There was a 24 hour rasta guard with a machete and a rifle walking around our hotel, there was an attempt to break into our car (we can see the sign of a metal bar but they didnt break the window....) and some Dutch guests had some of ...

Back to the Caribbean coast...

... Bocas del Toro as we had a few changes along the way. Bocas, as the area is known, is a cluster of Islands in the Caribbean off the coast of Panama and close to the Costa Rican border. We headed up to David bus station and were herded onto a bus straight away for Changuinola our first drop off point. When we arrived at Changuinola our friendly bus driver showed us where to get the bus to Calle 60 ...
