Historical Traveler Reviews Kata Palm Resort & Spa Kata Beach
Kata Palm Resort - Exzellentes Hotel in Phuket
Nice resort in Kata
We found this resort was nicely located in Kata within short distance to the beach, shops and restaurants. It was well laid out and had a very nice swimming pool with rooms on the ground floor having direct access to the pool. We couldn't book one of those rooms but were happy with the Deluxe one we were given which had a nice view over the pool and did not face another building. The room was comfortable and the shower pressure was good.
The resort seemed to be popular with families.
We found the breakfast buffet to be good and offer enough variety. The staff was friendly but I would not say that they went out of their way to provide a good service. The resort has 2 computers wih free internet access.
We arrived late in Phuket so we booked their transfer service from the airport to the hotel which was THB 650.
Kata Palm - an okay 3*
We stayed 3 nights at the Kata Palm near Kata Beach.
Hotel is well situated, for Kata Beach. 5 min. walk to the beach and or area shops/restaurants.
Hotel itself is okay. The pool is definitely the centerpiece for the property. We had a pool access room, where the patio steps straight down into the pool.
The room itself is a little war torn. Constant musty smell, we bought incense to mask it. Shower tile grout is moldy. Bathtub is grimy enough to keep us from using it. Bed is hard as a rock.
Also, they have some service/functional problems at the hotel. Wake up call was appropriately made on day 2. But then we received another wake up on day 3. They called 3 times, "Good morning" and a quick hang up. When the front desk was called after the 2nd time, they told us they had no wake up call ordered for us...yet we still received a 3rd call after that.
The A/C was shut off in our room 2x in the middle of the night. Both times they were fixed with a phone call, no repair man necessary. We suspect its a cost savings measure. Annoying to be woken in the middle of the night because your room is stifling.
If we had paid any more for the room, I would be upset about our time there. As is, we were anxious to leave by day 4.
Kata Palm Resort - Excellent Phuket Hotel
We stayed here late June 2006 for 3 nights and found that the Kata Palm Resort is as good as they advertise. The resort was just as pictured on their website. We got a deluxe room in the newer part of the resort which offered a great view of the resort's lavish pool area. The pool itself is what makes this resort fabulous. The poolside bar and grill was very cheap and offered a variety of drinks and dining options. The spa was excellent and offered generous discounts during the off-season. Our room was Thai decored with super comfortable down-like comforters. The deluxe room amenities include everything you need in a hotel and also had a day bed. Breakfast had a simple selection of continental fare, lots of fruits, and drinks. The lobby has one computer with internet access. Overall, this resort is great for the price and the amenities. The proximity of the hotel to the beach is about a 5 minute walk because of Club Med blocking direct beach access. The staff at the hotel spoke limited but understandable English, and offered excellent hospitality Overall, a great resort for couples and families.
We stayed 8 nights at this hotel in June. Booked a superior room and we got upgraded to a deluxe room as they had some maintance work on lobby (now all finished). Well worth paying extra, room was gorgeous. King size bed, shower and seperate bath. Lovely design with balcony. Added extras like safe/tea coffee/minibar and 2 bottle of drinking water - restocked each day. The hotel was probably only 30% full and staff were very helpful... though spoke little english. I think it's because it's low season, so staff levels low. The pool is fab, no good for swimming lengths, but lovely design. Take a meter taxi from airport to hotel as hotel will charge THB650. We only paid THB455 with meter taxi, you must walk past taxi touts outside airport and at end of building there is a red sign with 'meter taxi'. They are located in car park. Breakfast at hotel was fine, lots of choice.
Free internet provided in breakfast area. We didn't use Spa facilities as quite expensive, they had 50% discount approx THB800 for Thai massage. These can be found outside for THB200-300.... though Spa is lovely and private. Left of hotel is Kata Beach (5min walk to beach... past lots of bars/restaurants). Right out of hotel will take you to Kata Center (5/7walk). Best to cross over road and walk along pathway towards Kata Center, this avoids walking past bars and tailors hassling you! Had lunch one day at hotel, good & reasonably priced. Would stay here again.
Great value, suprisingly nice
I stayed for 4 nights at the Kata Palm Resort in April 2006.
It is a great hotel in my opinion- good value. I especially loved the quiet room, powerful shower, and firm mattress (king sized!). There is also a very impressive 40 cable channels to choose from! However bear in mind it is neither on the beach nor a "resort." That saidm the grounds ARE lovely- I was very impressed considering how cheap my rate was. The hotel is a large quadrant with guest rooms on the outer perimeter and the pools and gardens on the inside. There are a few swimming pools, a wet bar and a variety of food options on premises (at least 3 restaurants and although there is no room service, they WILL deliver to your room if you ask!).
The hotel has an old wing (about 3 years old now) and a new wing (built in the last year). The new wing is further away from the lobby. You may want to request the new wing although I think you pay a premium for this privilege. The lobby has an open air sitting area and a free Internet terminal as well as an activities desk. Breakfast is okay- a lot of Thai options and some cereal and fruit for your western option. There is a nice alcove overlooking the pool and garden where you can have your breakfast each morning!
The hotel is actually about a 7-10 minute walk from the beach. It is on the road behind the Club Med (and the Club Med is on the road immediately across from Kata Beach) so in fact the beach is not even visible from the premises. You can walk, hire a taxi, or I think in summer months there is a free shuttle service to the beach.
Whilst shops and stuff are within walking distance, there is nothing immediately on the road near the hotel. In fact I would say it is on a quiet strip of road. There is a 7-11 a few minutes walk away where you can stock up on sodapop and snacks. A 5- 10 minute south of the hotel walking and you come to a "busier" section of road with lots of vendors and restaurants.
One thing- if you are leaving early for the airport MAKE SURE THEY HIRE A CAR FOR YOU. I had advised them no less than 3 times the day before that I needed a car at 6am to take me to the airport (it is a 1 hour car ride away) for my 8am flight. I went down to the lobby at 530am on my departure day and no car had been arranged. It took 45minutes for them to find somebody to drive me to the airport- but I do not hold this against them as it was the day after Thai new year. However, the desk staff had failed to inform the morning crew that I needed a car in the morning - despite several assurances that they would take care of it! This could have potentially been a huge liability as I would have missed my flight and connection onward (It was Thai holidays the next flight out was 4 days later!!! So this was a pretty important point in my book).
All-in-all I can recommend this hotel with confidence! It is a great option on Kata Beach and I would return. (Just be sure the MANAGER knows if you need special after hours car service.)
Stayed here for 3 nights at end Dec 05. Good location, a few minutes walk to good selection of bars, restaurants and shops, and about 10 mins walk to the beach.
Hotel is very nice, good standard of rooms, good breakfast selection, free internet in lobby. Best of all
is the pool area. Huge pool, beautifully landscaped, particularly outside the new deluxe wing, where there are rooms with balconies where you can walk straight into the pool. If we'd known how nice they looked beforehand, we'd have paid the extra for one of those! Overall, highly recommended.
