We headed out of town to Achilleion Palace, the retreat for the Empress Elizabeth of Austria. We had learned about her life when we were in Vienna last year. ... to Italian churches. We then drove to Achilleion Palace which has beautiful gardens and classical statues overlooking the coast. This was built by and Austrian empress in the late 1800s - and it really was very beautiful. During the war it was used as a hospital and later as an orphanage before it was restored for tourists to view. We drove through the main town and by this stage it was so wet we decided to return to the ship and warm up and have ...

Day 46 - Corfu Greek Island

A travel blog entry by ttdaniel on Oct 03, 2014

... we were back on the bus to continue up the mountain side of Lakones with more stunning views of Paleokastritsa. The next stop was a traditional village of Makrades where we went to a charming taverna and had a traditional Greek appetiser - meze and local wine. The taverna's interior was decorated with traditional 18th & 19th century agricultural tools and an intriguing old olive press. Afterwards we had free time to explore the village. There were ...
