We took a week off in May and went to explore the mountains. The Balkan range runs across the middle of Bulgaria dividing the country into two halves. It has rocky mountains, wooded wilderness valleys and lots of history. Many of the events leading up to independence in 1878 were based here and it is hard to find a single town where it is not commemorated. Did this a couple of years ago on a road trip with my friend Pat, it was falling down then.....3 years later a bit more of it has fallen down!

Wow what an exhausting but outstanding day. All my reservations about flying to Istanbul and beginning this adventure form there are now gone. This place as seen to that on its own!

As it was a cloudless, blue sky, I got up early to wash the inside of the tent out as well as wash up all the bedding stuff. It was simple enough and by 9'oclock, everything was already dry.

Despite not a great deal of sleep, I was starting to feel better. The morning showers had me packing the tent away at supersonic speed.

The moment I heard the rain, I was off like a rat up a drainpipe. We made an early exit from Bucharest in order to get to the Bulgarian border. Crossing the bridge over the Danube reminded me so much of the sleeper train I took to Thessaloniki back in 2007.
