bromo, East Java, Indonesia yaco... more splendid in the 70's which is where the decor comes from, but it's spacious and clean and the staff are very speedy and helpful. We've booked a tour leaving at 1am to see the sunrise over a nearby volcanic area and then we walk up to the crater of one of them and also managed to find it much cheaper than anywhere else by using the towns official tourist board which is nearly always closed, but not today! From here we are heading west again on ...
Cemara Lawang, Java, Indonesia planetvale... back down, which was cool because I got to see (except for the mist) what we had hiked through in the dark, including the local farmers and fields. Mostly green onions / leeks in what looked like back and ankle-breaking work. Interestingly, they cooperatively farm. Although each owns their own land, they rotate so that everyone works one particular plot together at the same time. It allows camaraderie during the day, and only one person's ...
Cemorolawang, East Java, Indonesia cadkinsca... a wool cap, or some gloves/thick socks. We have a warm supper, made of a hot vegetable soup, fried chicken and chips (NO RICE!!), and of course, some fruit. Everybody in the restaurant seems cold, and we decide to have a hot chocolate with toasts before going to sleep. We are in bed at 19:30!!! Four blankets over us in bed, and embraced one to another to keep warm. Good night!
Malang, Indonesia josep7778... followed them. Behind us the faintest of glows appeared above the mountains as the dawn followed us to the volcano. A few carelessly laid (or moved?) stones nearly took us straight up the gully-filled slope of the mountain to the left of the main path but we realised the mistake, retraced our steps, and ignored the local horseman who appeared out of the night and, in chagrin at our refusing to hire him as a guide, pointed us in what - we ...
Cemoro Lawang (Mount Bromo), Indonesia timreis... fine volcanic ash and sand) caldera and is enclosed by perpendicular walls 350 metres high. Bromo is in fact only one of many peaks inside the massive Tengger Caldera, but it's easily recognized as the entire top has been blown off (I didnt realise this at the time). Althought its not an active volcano, per say, volcanic sulphur fumes and smoke still emanate from the depths. The highest and still active volcano is Mount Semeru. You can see smoke coming ...
