Turned out we were both on lower soft sleeper on the way to Xi'an from Shanghai, and the other two people didn't join until 9 so we had the first 2 hours to ourselves. Train wasn't bad, we left at 7pm and got in at 11am.
When we left the train station a woman came up to us and asked where we were going, we said to try and buy more tickets …

They drive as daring as fighter pilots on suicide missions - against traffic - even cutting off busses packed with riders. Its absolutely crazy. However, with all the traffic and honking and motor bikes and people we did not see ...
... the old down town area so the best way to see it all was by bike! Luckily enough the bikes were relatively modern and got us around the top in about an hour and a quarter, with stops to admire the city. It was really hot by the time we finished so it was with relief that we went for lunch.
Did I say lunch? Try an 18 dumpling banquet for size. Its another local speciality and it sounds worse than it really is but very tasty. The restaurant ...
... Originally I was told that our students would begin their day at 6:40 am, just like the Chinese students, and not see it come to an end until 8:30 pm. Imagine my disappointment when I was told the schedule had been modified to a pedestrian 8:00-4:00 pm? Somehow I felt my popularity as a principal would grow with these students if they just experienced that 14 hour at-school-day one time. Our American teachers got to sit through two classes before we headed off for the day. ...
... the work ok, and none of us went screaming from the room, so that has to be a good start! I was told by one of the UK teachers that he can't wait for me to get a reading class that then go up a level to him, so the amusement at the accent isn't confined to the kids..
Yesterday we decorated the school for Halloween. Normal classes were cancelled for M, T, W, and parents purchased a ticket for their kids ...
