Ubud and the Monkey Forest (Bali) After being pampered in that unreal haven that was Karma Resort - Kandara, I was back in the real world. Lugging my 20kg backpack around like a turtle with its shell, hot noonday tropical heat and Lonely Planet in hand, trying to find a way to my next destination. In this case, it was the picturesque tourist-trap town called Ubud, set inland amongst verdant rice terraces and famed for its artists and traditional dances/performances. Me, I'm just there to feed...
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia kafir_melAhh Bali, that Australia holiday cliche. I descended upon the madness that is Kuta beach, the ever-pulsating tourist heart of Bali, bursting with more foreign tourists, souvenir stalls, funky tourist restaurants, chic bars, pesky vendors, surfer dudes and scooters than you can shake a peanut-sauce covered satay stick at. It beats Phuket hands down in terms of scale, and makes the Gold Coast look like a one-horse town. Like the kiasu Singaporean that I am, my first instinct was to try and exp...

... world country Indonesia really needs the tourist industry to remain strong, and it suffered a tremendous blow as a result of the bombings. As Beth mentioned in the previous post it's very apparent in the changes she saw in Candidasa from 2002 to now.

Monday morning we set our alarms for 3 am to catch the first flight out with Toni for Yogyarkarta on Java island. It was a quick one day trip so we hired a guide, Trudi, to ...
Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia keithandbeth... the tide retreats and exposes the insurable reefs which are heavily populated at high tide. We did consider and enquire about getting lessons out on the island but it would have invariably resulted in having to surf on reefs so decided to leave that to the professionals although some of the waves out there were so amazing. We decided to let them inspire us rather unnerve us and so we headed back to Kuta in search of some friendlier waves and to finish off our Balinese experience!
Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia ciaradoonerush... say – “why don't you ask him – he looks like he
wants to buy fruit!” But to no avail she sticks to us like glue
following us – and when we try to dodge her we hear, “Karen, Mark
over here!” According to our guide book the way it works is these
ladies (mostly ladies) approach you and bring you to a stall they
receive a commission from the stall on whatever you get. After
saying no about 10 times – she moves on to ...
Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia carlaandmike... they did know was very basic. But, the hard part was that they couldn't quite comprehend what we did try to teach them. It was hard for them to even repeat the words we were saying, and many of the kids were too hesitant to try once we went around and asked them to speak. We tried to sing songs with them, but it was like pulling teeth. Believe me, taking up an hour and a half was more than difficult. The next hour we had two classes to teach: the third grade and the ...
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia snclark8... then headed up for a drink at a restaurant that overlooks Kinta Mani. This is Bali's largest volcano that last erupted around 1963. It also has a basin that houses a lake and what is left of a couple of volcanoes. They are in the process of rebuilding their cones. We are pretty high up, and a restaurant has decided to take advantage of this area and create a wonderful outdoor terrace for the busloads of tourists that come up for a peak at a volcano and of ...
Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia graceonthego... swimming at Dream Island. The following days we are going to finish our surflessons and start traveling around. We also met some other Austrian girls but the are going to leave in two days. It was quiet funny to hang up with them, partiing and meet with our surf guides. The Balinesian people are more than nice and friendly ...
Kuta, Bali, Indonesia mikesbOur last night we wandered the humongous Kuta beach...made some more new friends...and attempted the night life, one last night. Kuta beach is swarmed with vendors and everywhere you walk people are shoving necklaces, sarongs, scaves, etc in your face. Especially being white, we didn't stand a chance. The beach itself is filled with people, locals playing "football," and plenty of tourists. After the sunset we just walked around, we went to the ...
Kuta, Bali, Indonesia sunikhosa... We'll need to hire a driver to take us up there on Thursday morning. Again it was sunny in the morning so we laid out and swam to get a bit of sun. But again we had another thunder and lightning down pour in the afternoon. Seems to be something of a pattern developing here! We decided to try another place to eat for dinner and got a recommendation from a friend of Beths. Had Made take us down in his car. It was a nice place. I had BBQ Goat Leg, Kathy had Vietnamese paper ...
