... alone; never wear extravagant jewelry; never leave car windows down when stopping. Sometimes we get the warnings directly from the locals who are concerned about our safety and the reputation of Trinidad: don't count show your money when you are counting it to pay for something; don't take your credit card to Carnival and don't take more money than you can afford to lose; and one of our favorites from a local in a Mall store -- "don't accept no drugs from strangers".
Martinique, Martinique questmiller... one of the large supermarkets on the island. Shaz loves the French ones because the selection is huge and the fresh food is great, much better than the dodgy food available in supermarkets on the British Islands. After leaving Forte de France we headed North to a small historic village called St. Pierre. At first glance this village looked a little run down and not terribly inviting. The coastline at this end of the island is much different from the light sandy ...
Fort De France, Martinique bellavita... of cannon range? According to another source, the French succeeded in reclaiming the island by wrecking some boats filled with casks of rum. After the British drank themselves silly, the French took the upper hand and got their island back. Again, we ask why? They could have let the Brits starve themselves off and saved the rum. We continued north and anchored once again in the beautiful waters of Grand Anse D'arlet. This time ...

Virgin Mary statue overlooking the town. Watched a pod of dolphins play in clear water on our bow. They were so close, I could hear them breathe when they surfaced.

Fort-de-France, France jaguar74... it is easy to say that I am easily falling into speaking this difficult language and I know that one day it will be as easy and no one will question me! (Thinking...please come soon). :) Right now, I have my last class tomorrow and then my class is going Kayaking in the Mangroves for the afternoon. I am really excited! For the rest of my stay, I will be spending my time either working on my paper (all in French) and at the beach ...
Schoelcher, Martinique jess06Bonjour de Martinique!! So I haven't had any time to write a blog and I only have a computer twice a week. Time sure does fly. Martinique...man..what a place. It is beautiful, the beaches are amazing, I haven't been sunburned (yet) and I have lots of new freckles! I love my host family but the communication in French is a challenge but it gets easier every single day. So far I have been to the center, north and east of ...
Fort-de-France, Martinique jess06... and beautiful island. After a lunch at Paradise Café in Portsmouth where Martin introduced me to Provisions, a side dish of root vegetables (dasheen, yams, sweet potatoes) and green plantain, we went to Martin's boat Providence for a tour of the Indian River. This river may only be toured with a guide and no motors may be used. Martin rowed and poled us up the river explaining all of the flora and fauna we were seeing and pointing our fish and crabs all along the way. Birds sang to ...
Fort de France, Martinique freespirit2006Back on Martinique. Hired a car. Drove round the island. Stayed for a few days at a banana plantation. Went all over to the old capital, under the vulcano. Visited churches, beaches and museums. I swam in huge waves and saw fish dancing in the sea. Then the waves turned on me and chrashed me into the sandbed. Scratched and bleeding I saw the rest of the day from the ...
