... us a decent price for repair and date of delivery and then actually charged us that price (to the penny) and finished on time. The other bad news about Martinique is that while we were waiting for the repair to be done, the entire island went on strike. More good news is that we went shopping and had an island tour before everything closed down. The worst bad news is that I didn't get nearly enough cheese and wine to last very long. We fortunately booked a ...

New Years Eve........What New Years Eve?

... of the south, with steep hills and dark volcanic rock and sand lining the shores. However once ashore it was actually a charming little fishing village that had been destroyed by a volcano some 20 years ago. The old church was rebuilt and parts of the village, but most was just stuck back together in a ramshackle way. Fortunately we were there on a Saturday morning and were very impressed by their fresh food market along the shore front one of the best we've seen.

... markets and have lunch local style. Most offering are the same as on other islands just with the name changed. I managed to buy a few Christmassy things in Europe (pudding, custard, chocolates) not knowing what would be available in the shops here on the islands. Lucky as there wasn't much to choose from and the prices were pretty frightening but thanks to those Kiwis and their sheep we were able to secure a leg of lamb ($70 AUD) for our Christmas dinner. The weather here ...

First Day at the beach

We went to this beautiful beach less than five minutes from our hotel room. It was super amazing, the fish actually we by my feet. Christina screamed like a baby, she freaks out at the site of live fish. She yelled at Nemo and flounder. Reduit Beach, St, Lucia's acclaimed best beach.

... find the phrase fast enough. We have some ready to go: "Mon ancre est la-bas" (mohn ahn-kruh eh lah-bah) - "My anchor is over there!" and "Vous etes trop pres" (voo zeht troh preh) - "You are too close!" I've been wanting to look up, "A little more clothing might be appropriate for your body type", but can't find that one. This book would have been handy last year when my semi-French-speaking brother was visiting and we needed ...

Heading North

16/04/08, Wednesday, 18:00, St. Pierre, Martinique Had a nice sail up here today - the wind and current were with us. Mountains here are great. Virgin Mary statue overlooking the town. Watched a pod of dolphins play in clear water on our bow. They were so close, I could hear them breathe when they surfaced.

15/04/08, Tuesday, 22:30, Rodney Bay Dinner and pool was great two nights ago. Had two great days after that hanging out at Scuttlebutts. Met crazy Norwegian guy there today. [No, seriously, this guy was nuts. He and his friends decided to quit their jobs, buy a boat, and sail around the world. One of them had been sailing before - they made him captain. My kind of people.]

... our next choice was Basse-Terre or go all the way to Pointe a Pitre. The visitors dock in Basse-Terre harbour is a stern-to setup which is a hassle for a short stop, especially in FS with her low and long sugar scoop stern. The anchorage outside the harbor was very rough so we opted to round Pointe du Vieux Fort and sail north to Pointe a Pitre. If you look at a map you will see that Guadeloupe is shaped like a butterfly and the capital is in the middle. It was a long haul ...

... with Murph and Jo's new underwater camera. This was amazing. We went out in the tender to a little reef. The minute we plunge into the water we were surrounded be every colour shape and size of fish imaginable. We spent about two hours swimming with the puffers, barracudas and a hundred other types of fish we had never seen before. Murph and Jo snapped away and martin managed to loose his watch which we can only assume must have disappeared into one of the volcano shaped corals ...
