... alone; never wear extravagant jewelry; never leave car windows down when stopping. Sometimes we get the warnings directly from the locals who are concerned about our safety and the reputation of Trinidad: don't count show your money when you are counting it to pay for something; don't take your credit card to Carnival and don't take more money than you can afford to lose; and one of our favorites from a local in a Mall store -- "don't accept no drugs from strangers".
Martinique, Martinique questmiller... with friends and family on New Years Eve at home. Well that's a first! - Looks like we missed the New Years Eve celebrations. The funny part is, we thought we would go out for dinner with the Seamister's the next night to celebrate. However after a few hours of traipsing around the city there were only 3 restaurants open and we're talking the capital, which is a good size town with freeways and large buildings and each one was booked out for a private party ...
Fort De France, Martinique bellavita... markets and have lunch local style. Most offering are the same as on other islands just with the name changed. I managed to buy a few Christmassy things in Europe (pudding, custard, chocolates) not knowing what would be available in the shops here on the islands. Lucky as there wasn't much to choose from and the prices were pretty frightening but thanks to those Kiwis and their sheep we were able to secure a leg of lamb ($70 AUD) for our Christmas dinner. The weather here ...
Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia bellavitaWe went to this beautiful beach less than five minutes from our hotel room. It was super amazing, the fish actually we by my feet. Christina screamed like a baby, she freaks out at the site of live fish. She yelled at Nemo and flounder. Reduit Beach, St, Lucia's acclaimed best beach.
Gros Islet, Saint Lucia romanusdolorRelatively speaking, the Caribbean weather this winter has been well, stinky. I know this will elicit tears and moaning from some of our family and friends "up north", but the reason we came here was to be really hot and swim a bunch to cool off. While I can say that both of us are sporting tanned skin (not on purpose or from sun bathing), we've rarely been swimming - it just isn't hot enough. We may get warm inside the cabin ...
Le Marin, Martinique questmiller16/04/08, Wednesday, 18:00, St. Pierre, Martinique Had a nice sail up here today - the wind and current were with us. Mountains here are great. Virgin Mary statue overlooking the town. Watched a pod of dolphins play in clear water on our bow. They were so close, I could hear them breathe when they surfaced.
St. Pierre, Martinique tigereye15/04/08, Tuesday, 22:30, Rodney Bay Dinner and pool was great two nights ago. Had two great days after that hanging out at Scuttlebutts. Met crazy Norwegian guy there today. [No, seriously, this guy was nuts. He and his friends decided to quit their jobs, buy a boat, and sail around the world. One of them had been sailing before - they made him captain. My kind of people.]
Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia tigereye... s chartplotter and instruments make night sailing a relative breeze but fish trap floats can be a problem day or night. Too many fishermen use clear soda bottles to mark their traps and these are a bear to see in any chop. We decided to move off shore into water hopefully too deep for traps and worked our way south to the Jacques Cousteau National Park. We hoped to be able to pick up a mooring off Pigeon Island for the night and to snorkel first thing in the morning. When we ...
Fort de France, Martinique freespirit2006... Sun 27th we were off to neighbouring Dominica. To us the waves out at sea seemed quite big and you felt a bit green round the gills it you went below deck. I was power winched to the top of the mast in a harness; Graham didn't bother as he spends all day doing that kind of thing at work. It was really exciting and you got a great view of the boat. We tried fishing with a line behind the boat but to Graham's frustration, nothing. It took a few hours to reach Dominica, and before we'd ...
