... where you are because it is such a different climate and ecosystem, atmosphere al together, I think everyone has had a culture shock when they have come to Africa, either when you say ‘TIA’ at the bad things that go worng, but also ‘TIA’should be said when you see the natural and uter beauty the continent has to offer which you really wouldn’t see back home.

lets just say the afternoon where sitting by the poolwas interrupted by 4 huge massive ...
South Luangwa National Park, Zambia courters... of Malawi. With 12 million people and only very little land as Lake Malawi takes up 1/5th of the country's area, Malawi is overcrowded. As HIV /AIDS infection rates are one of the highest in southern Africa, half of the population is under the age of 15. You see old people and very young ones, but few in-between. The Malawians are very friendly, but at the same time hold their hand out for money as we have experienced in most other countries. The average Malawian is poor ...
South Luangwa National Park, Zambia hans-jenny... supposed to be on duty protecting us all from elephants. On the way back to the campsite we saw the same elephant throwing his weight around against a car! He broke the window of the car as the owner had apparently left some food in there. As an aside we also did some game drives here including at night where we saw some lions and some nocturnal animals like genets, civets, hyenas and bush babies.
South Luangwa National Park, Zambia mpoelzlAt over 9000 sq km, South Luangwa Park is roughly half the size of Etosha, and is also world renowned for it's huge population of elephants (10 000 in total). The lifeblood of the park is the Luangwa River which forms one of it's borders. Sadly there used to be over 100 000 elephants in the region but poaching has reduced that by 90%. This has now been curbed by anti-poaching squads, education, and economic development. Today the ...
South Luangwa Park, Zambia cerimattrtw2006This morning, I was woken at 0500hrs and after a breakfast, we went for our morning game drive until 1000hrs. We saw more antelopes, elephants, giraffes, zebra and lots of birds. Again, brunch was served at 1100hrs and afterwards, siesta until 1530hrs. I had a snooze and lay by the pool for a bit. Actually, you could see quite a bit of wildlife from the hottub which is ...
Mfuwe, Zambia john_lengacher... We got to the lodge at around 10.30am and I was shown to my room, a free-standing bungalow with two beds under a huge moskito net, a couple of lounge chairs, a bar fridge and tea & coffee facilities, a bathroom and an outdoor sitting area overlooking the flood lit river. I was told not to walk outside after dark without a guide (just clap your hands 5 times and one will appear). At 1100hrs, we had brunch ...
Mfuwe, Zambia john_lengacher... on his head! Once we recovered from the bee stings, the tour went very well and it was interesting to see how they made the beautiful fabrics and colourful designs. Of course, we had to pick up a few things to remember the experience! We stayed at a campsite just outside the park. Since the campsite is not fenced off, animals ...
Mfuwe, Zambia edamame... started to freak out but luckily there was a guy on our trip that told us that the lions can't see us individually and instead just sees the shape of the vehicle which it recognizes as something like an elephant so it won't even bother with us. That is unless someone is stupid enough to move their arms outside of the car, then the lion will recognize the shape as prey. I'm so glad that this guy told us (which I kind of hoped that our ...
South Luangwa National Park, Zambia amykclancy... round, rain hail or shine, a car wash at a service station has been turned into a rug (as in floor) wash and a small army of people were scrubbing away at peoples rugs... Although very poor Lusaka is cleaner than most cities I have seen, again armies of people wielding household brooms sweep the streets. Every school child (black or white) I saw was scrubbed to within an inch of their life and wearing a spotless uniform. Poor in financial terms only it seems, pride is still alive and ...
