... at the JR train station the tourist information staff showed me a sign saying that 200 metres up the road is another tourist information with English speaking staff. For ordering a meal in a restaurant it was crucial that they have pictures on their menu. Paying in a super market meant handing over notes with both hands, nod and smile to what they say. It was obviously a building for Hanamatsuri, accommodating only about 100 people including a music band made up of Japanese flute and drum players. The dance hall was smoky, because there was a large fireplace just beside it which enabled spectators to have a warm.
