... were mostly men while others included women and children. Will enjoyed watching the parade but was disappointed he couldn't help pull or ride on the shrine. At 3 pm, a reenactment of a battle (I'm assuming the key battle in the Nanso Satomi story as the narration was in Japanese) took place on the beach. Warriors paraded onto the sand. More Samurai waited in boats off-shore before disembarking and storming the beach. The 8 Samuarai from the ...

Today we visited the Great Buddha (Kotokuin Temple) of Kumakura. It's a huge Buddha statue which was truly a sight to see. We were able to go inside for an extra 20 yen (about 20 cents). This curry was created to satisfy the food cravings of the British sailors. Then it stuck and is very popular in Japan. ...

... perplexed me. If somebody is breathless due to heart failure, how would he/she know to see a cardiologist, not a respiratory physician? Apparently they see whoever they think appropriate. Unfortunately, I am told, often the situation just gradually worsens and they end up in A/E. Interestingly because of the system from which it is evolving, family medicine hours are not any easier than hospital hours and includes on calls and ...

After a weekend in Tokyo with my mum, my 2 weeks on Home Care medicine began. There are approximately 150 patients under the care of this team, comprising of family medicine, general medicine, and palliative care doctors. Most work a few shifts a week or month away from their own jobs. Sometimes this includes night on calls. Roughly a third of the patients are terminal cancer, a third chronic diseases, and a third disabled or otherwise frail. ...
