Mountain living, onsens and legedary Hida beef!

... tub in an enclosed space outside and proceeded to soak in that on my own for a good 20 mins (i believe the term i would use to describe my complexion after that was beetroot!).

Post soak and it was time for dinner at a local eatery which was kind enough to introduce us to a local delicacy of the region- Hida beef. While quite fatty, this beef is quite lean on the outside with most of the fat content coming from the multiple, fine marbled lines that run through it ...

Night in Matsumoto

... some money on cab fare. Hopefully I can remember to ride on the left side of the street and the other vehicles remember to do the same. I'm also hoping that the rumors of English-speaking guides are true.

Adjusting my expectations... I had thought I'd zip through the castle and get to Kyoto early. Probably not. Everything takes longer than you think.

... ville.

... for being of the Gassho-zukuri (literally “praying hands”)-style of thatched roofs. Built steeply to withstand the heavy snows, the thatching on the roof is an amazing 2-3 ft thick! Several of the buildings are open for exploration and contain artifacts from the period. Fires burned in most fireplaces to help repel insects and preserve the structure, as well as adding period atmosphere.
<br ...

Takayama

Kamikochi: Total Washout--Literally

... found shelter, it was in an overpriced restaurant for more soba, which I'm sick of by now. The saddest thing is that I know that this place has some really beautiful views--not only in postcard, but there's a section where you're walking on planks over a bog that is running between a forest of trees, and it's eerie and it's totally unique. Plus, occasionally, the snow open up and you see some shadows of mountains all around you. But four hours of dealing with hellish ...

... there. They DO love their gadgets here, so after standing at the sink for a few seconds wondering why the soap and tap didn't seem to be working I realised that I actually had to PUSH the soap dispenser and TURN the tap - how quaint! Usually it is an all in one process - you just put your hands there and they get squirted with soap, washed and then dried - all automatically. But it is those electric toilets that really freak me out. We ...
